In FALL 2022 Learn about the great literary works of Lev Tolstoy IN PERSON

Instructor: Prof. Donna Orwin

Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy once remarked (in 1909) that “the secret of being boring is to say everything.” Long though his works often are, Tolstoy did not fall into that trap. His fiction seems to contain a clear moral message, but he wants his readers to draw their own conclusions from what he shows them. This course will introduce students to the major works of Tolstoy and will study a few of them in depth. Given the current political situation, we will look at the political-cultural implications and background of each text we read. As much as possible, close reading will be emphasized, and the instructor will bring film clips and art materials into the discussion.

Firebirds and Other Wonders: The World of Slavic Folklore (SLA256H1-S)
Tuesdays 12:00 — 14:00
Instructor: Prof. Taras Koznarsky

An introduction to the comparative study of folk narratives – fairy-tales, legends, epics, from Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, and the Balkans. Topics include the structural and psychological analysis and interpretation of oral folk traditions; the cultural specificity of Slavic folklore; its adaptation and treatment in literature, music, and visual arts. Taught in English, all readings in English.

The Danylo Husar Struk Programme in Ukrainian Literature of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta, is pleased to announce a series of online poetry readings by contemporary Ukrainian authors.

The readings will be conducted weekly during July and August, 2020. They will be hosted by Alex Averbuch. The details of each event will be posted on social media a week before the event. The poems will be read in the original language without translation. The readings will be followed by a group discussion on the latest trends and names in contemporary Ukrainian literature, and questions from the audience in English or Ukrainian.

The events will be conducted as online ZOOM meetings with simultaneous streaming to the Struk programme page.
