(If you believe in yourself, you can do anything.)

Can’t β†’ Can.

At Japan Karate-Do Kenseikan Canada, we live by this spirit every day β€” and this summer, we’re taking it to the next level with our Karate Summer Camp! πŸ₯‹πŸ•️

Why this message matters for our camp:
Camp is more than just training outdoors. It’s where young karateka learn that the biggest opponent isn’t the one standing in front of them β€” it’s the voice inside that says β€œI can’t.”

Through daily keiko (practice), nature challenges, team drills, and traditional dojo etiquette in a wilderness setting, campers will:

βœ… Break through mental and physical limits
βœ… Build unshakable self-confidence
βœ… Learn real self-defense and bushido values
βœ… Make lifelong friends in a positive, disciplined environment

This summer, we turn β€œI can’t” into β€œI CAN” β€” with every punch, kick, and tstep forward.

--- unforgettable day of growth, respect, and karate spirit.

Daily teachings: Zarei/bow vs Woship
Karate is not a religion but treat like one- Gichin Funokoshi ??
I've had some thoughtful questions from students / parents about bowing in a dojo. Some have shared that, in their faith, bowing is an act reserved only for God β€” and I want to address that with complete clarity and respect.

Let me be very clear with what the founder of modern karate, Gichin Funakoshi, said:
He taught that karate is not a religion, but we should treat it like one β€” not in the sense of worship, but in the sense of devotion, discipline, and character development. Funakoshi famously said:

"The ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory nor defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants."

He believed karate's highest purpose was self-cultivation β€” a lifelong path of moral integrity, humility, and respect. He also emphasized that the practice must "begin and end with respect" β€” "Rei ni hajimari, rei ni owaru".

What is Zarei (εΊ§η€Ό)?
In our dojo, we practice a formal seated bow called Zarei. This is performed by kneeling on the floor (seiza), placing both hands flat on the mat, and bowing forward.
Zarei is the highest form of respect in traditional karate. But let me be very clear β€” it is not an act of worship.

When we perform Zarei, we are expressing:
Β· Gratitude to the dojo β€” for providing a safe space to train.
Β· Gratitude to the instructor β€” for sharing their time, knowledge, and experience.
Β· Gratitude to our training partners β€” for helping us grow, improve, and push our limits.

It is the same as saying "thank you," "shukran," "gracias," or "arigato gozaimasu" β€” just expressed through body language rather than words. There is no prayer, no deity, and no worship involved in Zarei.

What bowing means in religion:
In many faiths β€” including Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Sikhism, and others β€” bowing or prostration is a sacred act reserved exclusively for God or the Divine. That is a spiritual practice, and it is entirely different from what we do on the mats.

The key difference:
Β· In karate (Zarei): We bow to people and spaces β€” as a sign of appreciation and mutual respect.
Β· In religion: Believers bow for God β€” as an act of devotion and submission.

What the bow means in our dojo:
When we bow, we are simply saying:
Β· "Thank you" to the dojo β€” for providing a safe space to train.
Β· "Thank you" to the instructor β€” for sharing their time and knowledge.
Β· "Thank you" to our training partner β€” for helping us grow and improve.

Again, it is the same as saying "thank you," "shukran," "gracias," or "arigato" β€” just expressed through body language rather than words. There is no prayer, no deity, and no worship involved. Funakoshi himself stressed that karate should focus on spiritual development, not technique alone.

Reciting the Dojo Kun vs. Religious Prayer πŸ“œ
At the beginning and end of class, students often recite the Dojo Kun (the five guiding rules/code of ethics) and kensei Hissho Kun. While chanting in unison while kneeling resembles a prayer, it is actually a character pledgeβ€”much like the Scout Oath, the Hippocratic Oath, or a school honor code.

The core principles recited in theDojo Kun (+Kensei Hisho- Kun at our Dojo) focus entirely on personal conduct:
🎯 Seek Perfection of Character – Commit to lifelong personal growth and discipline.
🀝 Be Faithful & Sincere – Be honest in your actions and keep your promises.
πŸ’ͺ Foster the Spirit of Effort – Give 100% hard work in everything you do.
πŸ™ Respect Others – Treat classmates, parents, and community members with courtesy.
πŸ›‘οΈ Refrain from Violent Behavior – Exercise self-control; karate is for defense, not anger.

The Target Audience: In prayer, you speak to a higher power. In the Dojo Kun, you speak to yourself and your training partners, reminding everyone how to act inside and outside the dojo.
Welcoming Every Faith & Background
🌍
Karate is a global discipline practiced by millions of people across all religious beliefs, cultures, and traditions. Dojo etiquette exists to create a clean, safe, and disciplined environment where everyone can learn self-defense and build confidence together.
