“It means the world that he can go.” Teacher Laura Palomino of Morse Street Public School is speaking of one of the students in her class. The student, who resides at a local shelter, is now enrolled for one of the Chess Institute of Canada (CIC)’s ‘Chess to Life’ programs at her school, thanks to her efforts, and a subsidy program offered by CIC.

Chess is for everyone! That's why the Chess Institute of Canada fully subsidizes youth who live in shelters and want to participate in our programs. Schools with a CIC chess program can contact us for details -- and schools without a CIC program are welcome to reach out to us about setting one up!

"...chess pushes the intellect of any person who sits down to learn its rules and study its vast possibilities. But a society convinced of the former idea unevenly distributes praise for mastering the game."

A good read for the weekend: Mychal Denzel Smith in The Believer, and "Scholar's Mate," a personal memoir and examination of not only the titular move but the power of chess to transform a life.

Congratulations to Hari G., who joined our Waterfront chess club in 2023 and took top spot at our September 27 PA Day camp and tournament!

“Playing chess and going to chess club makes me more confident in my life,” she says. “Practicing, and going to tournaments, has helped me develop confidence in areas outside chess.”
