I’m back in the office after a summer of rest and travels! I’m thankful for wonderful adventures with my kids (gallivanting through Italy!), and lots of memories made with friends, family, and the best dog in the world. I’ve already hit-the-ground-running in the past couple weeks, meeting with students and parents to talk about transitions to new schools, high school, post-secondary, and beyond. If you and your child/teen are ready to talk strategies to make this their best year ever, connect with me! Send me a DM, or go to the Linktree to set up a free consult call. I’d love to hear from you!

OK GRADE 12 STUDENTS:

I know you're tired.

Semester one was A LOT.

Applications season for university and college was A LOT.

And COVID... well, you know.

Keep your eye on your goals. You're half-way to the end of the year, and you've got your applications behind you.

YOU'VE GOT THIS!

In the school selection process, at any stage (new school / high school / university / college), find the BEST FIT school for you.

You've got options! Do the research to find the right school for YOU.

Ask yourself what you want in your post-secondary life:

-where do I want to live? urban, small city, or small town; large vs small student population; close to home or far away?
-what programs & activities matter to me?
-what kind of campus culture reflects the kind of person I am?
-and, can I get in?

For high school students weighing options, ask these questions:

-do I mind a longer commute than to my local school?
-what program interests & challenges me most? (IB, AP, STEM, Arts Focus, etc)
-would I thrive in a single-sex environment, or prefer co-ed?
-and, can I get in?

After all that, don't forget about the FEEL. Does the school feel like somewhere you'll be content, challenged, and involved for 4 years?

If you're putting together a Schools List, whether for high school or post-secondary, we can help. Contact us! We'd love to hear about it, and offer fresh perspective.

We're now in the second half of summer vacation.

Don't panic - there's still lots of time to enjoy the beautiful weather and relaxed routines!

This is a perfect time to come up with some “mid-summer reflections” with our children & teens. Last year’s classrooms are distant memories, and we’ve got a handful of weeks left to enjoy many outdoor activities.

Why bother?

Reflecting on the first half of summer together can help your family decide on future planning, and it can promote development of your child’s communication skills.

All through school, our kids practice reflective writing: starting in primary grades, and continuing through middle and high school. In this formal or informal writing style about any subject matter, teachers encourage students to express their thoughts and emotions, and discuss their memories and experiences.

Look back at your summer so far, and remember all the interesting, fun things you’ve done. Don’t be afraid to talk about disappointments or challenges too. And then, take the ideas to pencil and paper.

Here are some tips:

- ask the right questions: What’s your most favourite thing we’ve done this summer? What have you learned this summer? What are some things you still want to do before summer ends?

- offer materials for writing or drawing. Strike up a convo on a car ride if you don't feel like putting pencil to paper

- model the practice

- overlook technical stuff like grammar and spelling. Rules don’t matter in reflective writing. Its lack of strict rules motivates kids to write and share their ideas.

Encouraging a reflective practice with your child — either by printing in a journal, drawing on plain paper, or even having a conversation on a long car ride — can help improve your child’s communication skills by making their thoughts more developed, highlighting their self-awareness, and enhancing their critical thinking.

Have fun and make the second half of summer count!
