🎉 Congratulations to Professor Deepa Kundur, Chair of ECE, on being named a University of Victoria Distinguished Woman Scholar!

The University of Victoria’s Distinguished Women Scholars Awards recognize outstanding research and creative achievements by women scholars and create opportunities to share their work with the broader academic community.

Professor Kundur’s research sits at the intersection of cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and complex systems, with a focus on protecting critical infrastructure and advancing the security and resilience of emerging technologies.

Before ECE had its current name, electrical engineering was already taking shape at the University of Toronto. Students were conducting electrical testing in 1908, and the Department of Electrical Engineering formally emerged as an independent department in 1909.

The years that followed brought rapid change. By the end of the First World War, returning veterans helped grow departmental enrolment from 241 to 819 students. Among those who studied in the department during this era was Edward S. Rogers Sr., whose innovations in radio technology would leave a lasting mark on Canadian communications — and, decades later, on the name of the department itself.

What can a student research project grow into? đź’ˇ

Meet Ketevan Gallagher, a U of T Computer Engineering undergraduate whose work is helping preserve decades of development knowledge.

While still in high school, Ketevan collected and structured more than 4,000 USAID evaluation reports for a machine learning research project. When USAID’s Development Experience Clearinghouse later went offline, she connected with AidData about preserving the collection.

That work helped contribute to a new free, searchable and publicly accessible archive of evaluation reports spanning more than two decades - ensuring valuable evidence remains available to researchers, policymakers and the public.

Ketevan recently co-authored an AidData article exploring the project and why preserving development data matters.
