Harmony Movement was founded in 1994 as a not-for-profit charitable organization to combat inter-racial intolerance and to confront the “us versus them” attitude which was prevalent in Canadian society at the time. Our mandate is to promote diversity, bring awareness to and challenge all forms of discrimination that act as social and cultural barriers to individuals’ full participation in Canadian society. We work in schools and with social service organizations across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Southern Ontario. Harmony Movement is committed to:

What is actually making a difference for Black students and educators in K–12 schools right now?

Join Harmony Movement and the ONABSE-Ontario Alliance of Black School Educators for a free virtual event spotlighting promising practices from across Canada and the United States that are improving student achievement, strengthening belonging, supporting educator well-being, and creating more affirming school communities.

Together, we’ll explore approaches related to areas such as culturally responsive practice, Black student belonging, educator recruitment and retention, anti-Black racism, mentorship, student success, school culture, and system-level change.

Back by popular demand, Spotlight Talks are returning to the Educators Anti-Racism Conference! This year we’re looking for educators AND students!

We’re looking for inspiring, solutions-focused student and educator teams to share short-form Spotlight Talks about what they are doing to center joy, courage, and curiosity in schools and classrooms.

We want to hear about real ideas being put into practice. Talks should spotlight a promising practice, initiative, approach, or solution that strengthens belonging, challenges racism and inequity, or helps students feel seen, valued, and empowered. Presentations may highlight work happening at the classroom, school, or school board level.

Across Canada, educators and school leaders tell us they want to address harmful and discriminatory language, but knowing what to say in the moment, how to turn an incident into learning, and how to build a consistent approach across an entire school isn’t always straightforward.

That’s what the Words Matter Campaign was built to help schools do.

On September 1 or 29, join Harmony Movement for a free, 45-minute online demonstration of the campaign and see how more than 300 schools across Canada are using Words Matter to help educators respond with greater confidence, equip students to speak up, and intentionally build a school culture where harmful language doesn’t simply go unaddressed.

In preparation for the new school year, we’ve removed one more barrier: Words Matter Now Includes Curriculum Connections Across Canada

Over the past two years, we’ve had the privilege of working alongside hundreds of educators, principals, school board leaders, and community partners through the Words Matter Campaign.

As the campaign has grown, one question has come up again and again:

“How does this connect to our curriculum?”

It’s a fair question.

Educators are balancing an incredible number of priorities. Every new initiative has to fit within an already full curriculum, limited planning time, and the realities of busy classrooms.

We never wanted the Words Matter Campaign to feel like “one more thing.”

So we did the work.

Today, we’re excited to share that the Words Matter Campaign now includes curriculum connections for every province and territory across Canada.

About a month ago our friends at The 44 North dropped their full podcast episode “Beyond Words”, on the power of language and the importance of addressing anti-black racism in our schools and wider communities.

Applications are now open for Harmony Movement’s National Advisory Circle.

We are hosting a series of roundtable discussions and building a national online hub to help educators across Canada access trusted, classroom-ready resources to address hate, advance human rights, and foster safer, more inclusive schools.

To make sure this hub reflects the realities of classrooms and communities across the country, we’re looking for a diverse group of voices to help shape it.

We’re inviting:

- K-12 Educators
- Students
- School administrators and school board staff
- Human rights professionals
- Community organizations and school community members

As an Advisory Circle member, you’ll provide feedback throughout the project, helping guide the development of the hub and the recommendations that will support schools nationwide.

What to expect:

• Five virtual meetings (90 minutes each throughout the next 12 months)
• $250 honorarium
• No résumé required
• Application takes approximately 10 minutes

Application deadline: August 11, 2026

On behalf of the Harmony team, a big thank you to everyone who donated to our campaign. Sending sun to everyone who is taking some time to rest and celebrate a great 2025/26 school year.

We’ve spent thousands of hours working on bringing the Words Matter Campaign across the province. We’ve met with students, educators and admin from multiple boards, and they’re all saying the same thing: this work is important, and needs to be shared.

And you helped us do that. To every classroom, school gym, conference hall and community building that hosted Words Matter programming: thank you 🙏

After some rest, our team will be busy in the lab, preparing to take the Words Matter campaign Canada-wide.
