People for Education have released their annual report based upon a broad survey of school principals.
This year, after pairing up with Wilfred Laurier University, the survey reached out to principals across Canada for the first time. Not surprisingly, responses are heavily influenced by Ontario principals who have participated in this annual People for Education survey for years. They did so again this year.
Hopefully, principals from other Canadian provinces will increasingly engage to achieve a sizable, and comparable, dataset available for robust analysis as to deliver ever deeper insight.
The link to the People for Education report is in a comment below.
-- Excerpts --
“ … challenges with staffing ranked as one of the top two concerns of principal leaders across the country, alongside concerns about student well-being and behaviour…” p. 13
“A particular concern highlighted in the data is that these strategies disproportionately affect more vulnerable students - those with special education needs and additional language learners, whose specialized supports are diverted.” p. 13
“Mental health support for students remains the top priority. There are few supports available other than what the school can provide. Very long wait lists. Secondary School Principal” p. 16
“Educators, while dedicated, are not clinicians or trained specialists, and therefore cannot adequately address issues such as trauma, severe mental health, anxiety, or FASD.” p. 16
“ … most of the schools in our sample did not have regular, scheduled access to psychologists, social workers, or child and youth workers.” p. 17
“I am concerned for students who witness aggressive and violent behaviour towards staff and students, as we evacuate classrooms when students throw objects, attack students and staff, tip over furniture and escape. Watching this happen regularly can affect a child greatly over time. Elementary School Principal” p. 17
“The main reasons principals gave for the parent/guardian conflicts were dissatisfaction with supports or accommodations, which are typically tied to resources, and disagreement with decisions about their child (discipline, class changes, referrals, report cards).” p. 19

The real fear that I have for dyslexic people is not that they must struggle with jumbled input or that they can’t spell, but that they will quit on themselves before they get out of school. Parents must create victories whenever they can, whether it’s music, sports or art. You want your dyslexic child to be able to say: ‘Yeah, readings hard. But I have these other things that I can do.
