The Contemporary dance field of today may be defined by its fluidity, multiplicity and dynamism. To communicate and meaningfully contribute to this field, emerging artists must be agential, reflective, purposeful and be able to create contexts for their own work. Last chance to join our Artist Researcher-in-residence Lucy Rupert in her Science-Art-Imagination workshop is this Saturday!

With ten years of experience working on cross-disciplinary art-science projects, Lucy Rupert’s current research considers how tools of Contemporary dance can open up critical thinking and imaginative problem solving outside the art form itself. This artistic research residency acts as a preliminary plunge into a new work developed from theories on the evolution and the end of the universe.

We are delighted to share the news of the recent appointments of Patricia Fraser and Susan Macpherson as Members of the Order of Canada.

Patricia Fraser – For her lasting contributions to Canadian contemporary dance as an artist, dancer, educator, and artistic director.
Susan Macpherson – For her lifetime devotion to dance as an artist, educator, director, researcher, and mentor.

The Order of Canada is appointed to nominees whose contributions have made a lasting impression on communities across Canada and beyond. There is no clearer evidence of Patricia and Susan’s dedication to dance than to reflect on their pivotal roles in our school’s history. For nearly three decades, Patricia, Artistic Director from 1993 to 2021, and Susan, Artistic Associate from 1997 to 2021, profoundly invested in the school and broadened its horizons and those of multiple students, many of whom have made strong artistic contributions to the professional field themselves.

Congratulations to Patricia and Susan on receiving this highly prestigious honour!

We have an exciting new workshop coming up in the new year led by our second Artist Researcher Lucy Rupert in the 2023-2024 Research Residency series. Join Lucy Rupert for Science-Art-Imagination on January 20 and 27.

The root of this workshop is Lucy’s curiosity for the embodiment of scientific ideas, theories, and in particular, theories on the evolution of the universe. Lucy will lead participants through physical processes that provoke questioning around the ways we can and can’t do this, the things we see and feel in the attempts to try, all with the focus of expanding the body potential, the imagination, and our abilities to connect dots between distant ideas.

Michelle will be taking on a new role as the Managing Director of Art Canada Institute, where she will focus on strengthening organizational capacity, and nurturing people and culture, which have always been among her many passions. In her own words, Michelle expressed, "We've achieved so much together, and I am grateful and honored to have been a part of the evolution and transformation of this beloved organization.“

At this juncture, the Board of Directors have appointed Daniela Nardi as Interim Managing Director of Dance Arts Institute. Only one week remaining until '52 (navigation)' and ‘within sensation’ opens in this year’s SummerWorks Performance Festival 🎉

Up next we are highlighting ‘within sensation’ choreographed by Kt Ayer featuring dancer Micaela Janse Van Rensburg. “within sensation” is a contemporary dance piece that explores tension held in a body, how it accumulates, and how the body copes with it. It shares a meditative journey through the interpreter’s body, watching her process different sensations and emotions, as she steadily moves through space and time.

This presentation is part of a double-bill with “52 (navigation)”, and part of an ongoing partnership with SummerWorks that is generously supported by Lindy Green and Sam Chaiton as the Wi******er Prize.

Tickets are available online (link in bio). 🔗

Mark your calendars! 📅 Recent graduates and Wi******er Prize recipients Kt Ayer and Ellen Moore are presenting works in this year's Summerworks Performance Festival on August 3-6.

Today we are highlighting '52 (navigation)' by Ellen Moore featuring dancers Amelia Brown and Micaela Janse Van Rensburg. 52 (navigation) is the abstract, intimate portrayal of a relationship between two people. The work is inspired physically by task-based improvisation, and emotionally by the navigation of life; the surprising tenderness and strength that may arise from being vulnerable; and the strangeness which can bring us closer together.

This presentation is part of a double-bill with “within sensation”, and part of an ongoing partnership with SummerWorks that is generously supported by Lindy Green and Sam Chaiton as the Wi******er Prize.
