🏝️☀️🎓 Summer Highlights: Updates from DFL's Global Scholars

Learning from leading voices in her field, Egyptian DFL Scholar Hajer Radwan had a summer filled with exciting opportunities to deepen her expertise in the specialized field of textile engineering.

Hajer spent part of her summer at Wuhan University’s Reticular Chemistry Summer School, where she had the opportunity to learn under the instruction of Nobel laureate Prof. Omar Yaghi and Prof. Hexiang Deng, leading minds in the field. The program brought together emerging researchers and top experts, giving Hajer valuable exposure to new ideas and developments in textile science and innovation.

Her summer of learning continued in Morocco, where she attended the 25th AUTEX World Conference, an international gathering that brings together researchers, academics, and industry experts from across the field of textile engineering.

For Hajer, these experiences offered an opportunity to expand her knowledge beyond the classroom, connect with experts in her field, and gain a broader perspective on the work shaping the future of textile engineering.

As she returns to Ghent University for the second year of her International Master's in Textile Engineering, we’re excited to see Hajer continue building on these experiences and pursuing her goals with the curiosity, ambition, and dedication that make her a wonderful example of a DFL Scholar.

🎓 We are honoured to announce the graduation of DFL Scholar Rahma Elsaid, who now officially holds a Bachelor's in Social-Economic Sciences from UAntwerpen.

Rahma stood out during the 2023 Scholarship program cycle as an applicant, bringing a story shaped by determination, genuine curiosity, and a commitment to giving back.

Growing up in a village in Egypt, Rahma saw firsthand how limiting expectations could narrow the aspirations of young girls. Determined to chart a different path for herself while showing others that more was possible, she pursued a STEM-focused secondary education at Kafr Elsheikh STEM High School.

She emerged as a leader early on, spearheading her school’s Astronomy Club and organizing more than 10 workshops. What began with five members grew to nearly 100, reflecting her ability to build community through curiosity, creativity, and shared learning.

She carried this same spirit throughout her undergraduate studies as a DFL Scholarship recipient. A multi-year DFL Mentor, Rahma has supported applicants and new scholars, joined DFL's Leadership & Growth Forum in 2025 as a guest speaker, and embodied womens empowerment, academic excellence and mutual support which are core to DFL's mission.

From choosing growth over meeting expectations to creating opportunities for others, Rahma has consistently carried her commitment to community throughout her journey.

Meet DFL Scholar Salma Zanoun 🇪🇬

A background in pharmacy and scientific research led Salma Zanoun to explore how technology and data can help us better understand disease and improve healthcare. That journey ultimately led her to Bioinformatics.

This fall, Salma begins her Master's in Bioinformatics at the ULB - Université libre de Bruxelles as a member of DFL's 2026/27 scholarship cohort.

Through her studies, Salma hopes to strengthen her ability to use computational and biological data to address complex healthcare challenges and ultimately bring that knowledge and expertise back to Egypt.

Her journey reflects the purpose behind DFL's academic partnerships: connecting talented young women with advanced educational opportunities that expand both their own possibilities and their capacity to contribute to their communities.

🎓 We are honoured to announce the graduation of DFL Scholar Noran Khafaga, who has officially earned her Master in Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy from UAntwerpen.

As a DFL Scholarship applicant, Noran's background was defined by leadership and ambition.

Appointed the President of the Arab States Integrated Model League at Egypt's Delta University for Science and Technology, and later nominated to represent her university at the American University in Cairo, Noran was no stranger to serving as a role model.

During her Bachelor's, she opportunity to attend Hungary's Esterhazy University through an Erasmus program and upon her return, she established the first scientific association for physiotherapy at her home university, creating a space for her and her colleagues to exchange notes and upskill in a supportive setting. By passing on the knowledge she gained, she re-invested into her community and uplifted others in the process.

This is a quality that Noran put into practice throughout her time as a DFL Scholar, regularly supporting newcomer cohorts, staying in close touch with her peers, and staying deeply engaged as a pillar of the DFL community.

Noran has worked tirelessly to reach this milestone, and we are thrilled to have had the opporunity to celebrate it with her. Representing the Daughters for Life Foundation: Europe, Board Director Leila Wafi was present in-person at the ceremony to commemorate a truly joyous occasion.

Meet DFL Scholar Hala Elhassan 🇸🇩

We are proud to welcome Hala Elhassan, DFL's first Scholar from Sudan, as she begins her Master's in Economic Sciences at ULB - Université libre de Bruxelles.

Hala's academic journey in Economics has developed into a strong interest in understanding how economic decisions and policies shape people's everyday lives.

Her ambition is to build the expertise needed to contribute to more equitable, evidence-informed economic policies and ultimately use that knowledge to serve communities facing complex economic challenges.

Through DFL's partnership with ULB, Hala now begins the next stage of that journey in Brussels.

Her arrival is particularly meaningful as DFL welcomes its first Sudanese scholar into our global scholar community.

🎓 We are thrilled to share the graduation of DFL Scholar Ola Redwan, who has officially earned her Master's in Phamaceutical Engineering from Universiteit Gent this week!

As a graduate of Al-Azhar University, Ola's well-rounded portfolio left a strong impression on the selection committee. Her academic excellence, combined with her experience as a teaching assistant and her involvement in health campaigns through the Palestinian Pharmaceutical Students Federation, reflected a commitment to learning while making a meaningful contribution to her community.

Through her Master's in Pharmaceutical Engineering at Ghent University, Ola has continued to demonstrate academic rigor, frequently ranking as the top student in her class. Outside of the classroom, Ola has remained a steadfast mentor within the DFL community, uplifting fellow scholars and always striving to give back.

Ola’s journey reflects the determination, academic excellence, and commitment to service that Daughters for Life seeks to support through its scholarship program.

🏝️☀️🎓 Summer Highlights: Updates from DFL's Global Scholars

Over the summer, one of our DFL Scholars, Maram Al-Tamimi, celebrated an exciting achievement.

Maram, a Mechanical Engineering student at York University's Lassonde School of Engineering, returned to her home country of Jordan for the summer, where she had the opportunity to participate in the 2026 Microsoft X Techbridge Hackathon.

With friends, Maram's team built an AI model deployed on Microsoft Azure and led a live demonstration of an AI-powered platform. Throughout the event, she demonstrated the public speaking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills that continue to define her as an excellent example of a DFL Scholar.

By applying her technical skills beyond the classroom, stepping into a leadership role, and collaborating with a talented team, Maram and her group earned the event’s Best Overall Award.

We’re thrilled to see Maram thrive in an environment that encourages growth, and innovation, and we look forward to following her continued achievements both on and off campus. Congratulations, Maram! 🎉

🎓🏆 Behind every award is a student determined to keep going.

Through DFL's 2026 Emergency Education Initiative – Gaza, up to 120 female undergraduate students will receive USD $300 in direct tuition support across three participating universities.

It is a focused intervention, but one with an important purpose: helping reduce an immediate financial barrier so students can continue pursuing their education.

🤝 Because even in times of crisis, education creates hope, opportunity and a path forward.

🏝️☀️🎓 Summer Highlights: Updates from DFL's Global Scholars

This summer, one of our upcoming graduates of Universiteit Gent, Ola Redwan, spent the season collecting milestones and taking big strides forward.

We celebrate Ola's successful thesis defense, serving as the capstone of her Master's in Pharamceutical Engineering and her last academic obligation ahead of her Fall 2026 graduation.

She also spent time at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), a leading research university in Switzerland, as part of the 21st edition of the School of Life Sciences’ Summer Research Program (SRP). During the program, Ola had the opportunity to present her research, connect with peers from around the world, and create meaningful memories as she concluded her Master’s studies.

We're excited to see what lies ahead for Ola, and look forward to celebrating an incredible year of achievement in a few weeks!

Meet DFL Scholar Afaf Ouardi 🇲🇦

From Morocco to Belgium, Afaf Ouardi is beginning an exciting new academic chapter as a DFL Scholar at the University of Antwerp, where she will pursue a Master's in Digital Business Engineering.

A graduate of Lebanese American University with a Bachelor of Science in IT and Data Analytics, Afaf brings together a strong technical background with interests in communication, strategy and the ways technology can support better-informed business decisions.

Afaf is one of three scholars selected through DFL's partnership with the University of Antwerp for the 2026/27 academic year.

Her arrival also offered a wonderful example of the DFL community in action. DFL alumna Noran Khafaga, herself a University of Antwerp graduate, welcomed Afaf at Brussels Airport early in the morning, helping her begin her first day in Belgium with a familiar DFL face.

It is exactly the kind of connection we hope continues across generations of DFL Scholars: welcoming, mentoring and opening doors for those who come next.
