Hello, everyone, we have been contacted by Niki Mohrdar, an M.A student working on their final research project in the Communication and Culture department at Ryerson University. The study they're conducting looks at how first-generation immigrant women from the Middle East negotiate popular discourses of multiculturalism and ‘being Canadian,’ with their own experiences of immigration and living in Canadian society.
Niki is currently recruiting participants for this study. Participation in this study involves an individual interview and participation in a focus group. It will take a total of two days, with roughly a two hour time commitment on both days. The individual interviews, which will be completed in roughly four to six weeks, will precede the focus groups. Participants will be asked personal questions about their racial, gender, and immigrant identities. For example, they will be asked to speak about their experiences of immigration, their thoughts on Canadian multiculturalism, their experiences of living as a racialized, female body in Canadian society, and their thoughts on what it means to be ‘Canadian.’ Participation is entirely voluntarily, at all stages, and withdrawal from the study is allowed at all stages, if necessary.
Participants must be women, who migrated as children alongside their guardians. Women can be from the following nations: Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Yemen, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Immigrants must currently be between the ages of 20-35. They must have immigrated before 2007.
If you or anyone in your association would be a good fit for this study and are interested in participating, please tell them to contact Niki at [email protected]. Niki will then send them a consent form which outlines in more detail what they can expect. A time and place for the interviews will be determined once consent is given.
