In our upcoming report, Brainwell lays out exactly how to bridge the gaps between services and care in a way that prevents individuals and caregivers from having to do all the work themselves.

October is DV awareness month.

DV and dementia are both more likely to happen to women than men. And one is linked to causing the other.

As systemic issues which impact women across the globe, this is a conversation that needs to be had.

DV causes immense psychological and physical harm that lasts, and one of the longest lasting impacts is brain injury.

When a victim is exposed to multiple brain injuries across their life, the injuries can compound, and brain health can deteriorate.

We know it isn't possible to solve DV overnight.
We know not every victim can safely access healthcare.

But, understanding this impact is vital to the discourses about domestic violence and dementia.

A dementia diagnosis doesn't mean there's nothing more you can do.

Dementia rehabilitation focuses on something important: helping people maintain their independence, continue doing the things they love, and live as fully as possible.

From occupational therapy and physical activity to small changes at home, there are practical ways to support everyday life after a diagnosis.

We've put together a guide to help you understand where to start, what to ask for, and how rehabilitation can make a difference.

The Brainwell Institute has a clear vision.

And a clear ex*****on plan.

To enact change means creating conditions that allow no other option.

If we were to exist indefinitely then we may lose sight of our goals or become distracted by other issues.

Once a clear pathway through care exists for dementia, Brainwell will be able to close our doors, and say we reached our goals. That is what success looks like to us!

Imagine a different dementia journey:

A diagnosis comes with a clear path forward. You know where to turn, what support is available, and who can help you navigate what comes next. Care is connected across services, and families aren't left to piece the system together on their own.

That's the future Brainwell is working toward. Developing a coordinated approach to dementia care across Canada. Province by province.

This World Alzheimer's Day, we are looking forward.
To better care. Better coordination. And a better experience for people living with dementia, and those who care for them.

Dementia is a bipartisan issue. Every political party in Canada recognizes that much more needs to be done to mobilize coordinated care.

However, without the right questions, or goals and targets, the mission gets delayed and sidetracked.

That's why Brainwell has mobilized provincial task forces with this very goal in mind.

Regardless of who is in power, and individual politics, we understand that dementia care needs transformation to sustain throughout every political change.

Because dementia is a human issue, that can impact anybody.

Kate Swaffer, an Australian advocate, living with dementia, once explained her experience at diagnosis.

She was immediately left out of the conversation, as her partner was deemed the person with capacity to understand.

When discussing what comes next, the doctor diagnosing her told her to get her affairs in order and prepare for end of life.

This is unacceptable, but unfortunately it is common.

There is still widespread misunderstanding of dementia that leads to these experiences.

Have you had a similar experience? πŸ’¬πŸ‘‡

Once a person is diagnosed with a form of dementia, they have an average prognosis of 8 to 10 years.

Should they be sent home with no resources, and the idea that there is nothing to do about it?

Absolutely not.

We know there is so much we can do to slow progression, to lower impact, and to live well with dementia.
