Last week, 12 students working to complete their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award travelled to the Haliburton Highlands, where they learned to paddle, portage, set up camp, and cook over a fire during the four-day, rain or shine trip! 🛶

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is an internationally recognized program and was originally founded to encourage personal development, community involvement, and a spirit of adventure and discovery in young people. The SCS staff members on the trip were so proud of the resilience, teamwork, and positivity (as evidenced by their amazing late night campfire singing) these Clementines brought to the journey.

SCS is excited to welcome colleague schools on Saturday, November 21 for Staying in Relationship: Holding Community Under Pressure, our seventh EDI Conference. Schools are long-term communities; students, educators, parents, leaders, and board members continue learning and living alongside one another long after tension, disagreement, or discomfort occurs. This year’s conference theme explores what capacities help school communities remain thoughtful, connected, and capable of learning under those conditions.

Interested schools can learn more and register by reaching out to Mahlon Evans-Sinclair at [email protected]. or by visiting this link: https://www.scs.on.ca/staying-in-relationship-holding-community-under-pressure/

Earlier this year, Taylor Y. ’27 was introduced as STEM Captain for the 2026-2027 academic year and shared an inspiring speech about the power of asking one simple question: What if?

Drawing on her own experience in robotics, Taylor reflected on the importance of stepping outside our comfort zones and embracing the challenges that come with being a beginner. She spoke candidly about joining VEX IQ in Grade 7, struggling with unfamiliar concepts, and ultimately deciding that robotics wasn't for her. But two years later, she chose to give it another try, asking herself, “What if I tried again?” That decision led her to discover that STEM is about much more than science, technology, engineering, and math. At its core, she explained, STEM is driven by curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to learn.

Throughout her speech, Taylor encouraged students to see challenges as opportunities and embrace the process of learning through trial and error. Whether building a robot, joining a new club, or trying something completely unfamiliar, she reminded us that every expert was once a beginner.

She concluded with a powerful challenge to the SCS community: be curious, ask questions, take risks, and never be afraid to wonder, "What if?"

Thank you, Taylor, for reminding us that growth begins when we have the courage to try something new.

We were delighted to welcome author Danny Ramadan to SCS last week! 📚

Students in Grades 2-4 gathered in the Lassonde Library to hear Danny read Salma the Syrian Chef and share the inspiration behind his beloved Salma series. Our Clementines were captivated by the stories and eager to join the conversation, asking thoughtful questions and sharing their own unique cultural perspectives along the way.

Thank you, Danny, for a wonderful morning that sparked curiosity and plenty of excitement about reading.

Countless game days and expressions of Clementine pride! ⚽👟

Our current fall athletics season is well underway - and while we're clapping for current Clementines as they head off across the city to fields, pitches, courts, and pools, it's also a chance to cheer on previous athletes who have proudly represented SCS over the years! Athletics have long been an important part of the SCS experience, building confidence, teamwork, resilience, and lifelong friendships - not to mention lots of amazing memories! - along the way.

Here's to 125 years of doing us all proud, cheering loud, and always showing up for teammates!

The arts may look different for everyone, but their ability to bring people together is universal. In her introductory speech as Arts Captain for the 2026-2027 academic year, Sophia S. ’27 reflected on the many ways the arts have shaped her life and strengthened her connection to the SCS community. 🎭

From visual arts and musical theatre to choir, orchestra, and most especially dance, Sophia shared how creative experiences helped her step outside her comfort zone and embrace new opportunities. She spoke about the courage it took to join the String Orchestra as a young student, as well as the compassion she experienced from teachers during a memorable theatre performance and the curiosity that inspired her to audition for Chamber Choir.

Through these stories, Sophia highlighted the values of courage, compassion, and curiosity, while emphasizing the role of what she called the “secret fourth C”: community.

She also reminded us that the arts are not defined by flawless performances or perfect technique, but by their ability to help us express ourselves and connect with others.
