Dr. Robin Metcalfe is a passionate science educator, with over 2 decades of experience teaching physics and astronomy courses at York University. She is also active in STEM-related public outreach events and gives space-themed talks to a wide variety of audiences in both Canada and the U.S. Through her teaching and outreach, Dr. Metcalfe seeks to strengthen our appreciation for what the night sky has to teach us, to gain perspective from our place in the Universe, and to value our precious planet Earth.

The Allan I. Carswell Observatory is hosting an in-person sky-observing tour! The event will be on the Arboretum Lane Parking Garage just across from the York University Petrie Science and Engineering Building

Today is Space Saturday and today we will be discussing NGC 7640!

NGC 7640 is a barred spiral galaxy of morphological type SBc located in the constellation Andromeda, approximately 30 million light-years from Earth. NGC 7640 exhibits a central bar from which its spiral arms extend, characteristic of barred spirals, and shows evidence of past gravitational interactions with nearby galaxies that may have influenced its evolution and star formation history For observers in the northern hemisphere, NGC 7640 is best visible during autumn, particularly from latitudes above 30°N, where its declination allows it to reach high altitudes in the night sky. The optimal seasonal visibility window spans September to December, with the galaxy reaching opposition on September 13 and culminating near midnight during this period!

Astronomer in Residence 2026 Blog: Follow Along with Us!
John Wilmot AIR Term: Sep 7 - Sep 20 2026

John Wilmot's interest in astronomy began in childhood with constellation identification in Cub Scouts. His passion deepened with the purchase of a serious telescope and involvement in a local astronomy club. He has completed the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada's 'Explore the Universe' program and recently completed sketching the 110 Messier objects and serves as a director of the Barrie Astronomy Club, where he presents on astronomical topics. John has also delivered presentations at the Barrie Public Library, sharing his enthusiasm for the night sky with both adults and children.

Reminder! Join us this Wednesday for an exciting evening of astronomy at the Allan I. Carswell Observatory! We are hosting an observatory tour where guests will have a chance to explore the inside of our incredible 1m and 60cm telescope domes.
