tân'si, nitôtêmak 🧡 Hello, my friends.
A little language lesson to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day: While this nêhiyawêwin (Plains Cree) greeting directly translates to "Hello, my friends," it is really asking, "How are you, my friends?"
The nuance of this phrase goes deeper than a simple hello. It opens door to greater conversation, emphasizing the importance of connection and care for others and how those values are woven into the very fabric of the Cree language.
At Little Canada, our goal is to connect our guests to the stories of Canada and beyond, in the art, or visual language, of miniature. Just like how tân'si, nitôtêmak may seem like your everyday passing greeting, our tiny world is filled with details that invite a deeper understanding of this land we all call home. We hope today inspires curiosity, learning, and appreciation for the many Indigenous stories that continue to shape this land.
Our Cree Word of the Month series can be found in our Moose Moosings Newsletter, in collaboration with our partners at Naheyawin. https://little-canada.ca/newsletter-sign-up/
Congratulations to Team Canada 🇨🇦 on an incredible victory and for Jonathan David's rare host nation hat trick ⚽️🧢 The road to glory continues! 🍁🏆

James (Jim) Egan was one of Canada’s earliest gay activists, advocating for le***an and gay legal and social reforms through the print media, particularly during a tabloid frenzy of 2SLGBTQIA+ media discrimination beginning as early as the 1930s.
From late-1951 to mid-1954, under the pseudonym J.L.E., Egan authored several articles exploring the history of 2SLGBTQIA+ peoples and focused on demanding equality for g**s and le***ans, greater public education about homosexuality, legal reform, and an end to discrimination.
The little scene you see here depicts Jim Egan and his lifelong partner and fellow activist, Jack Nesbit, sitting next to a newsstand that features the headline from True New Times in November 1951. The headline reads “Beginning New Series on Homosexuality.”
