In the heart of Toronto’s downtown, Westside Montessori offers a nurturing and supportive environment

Now in Rome 🌍✨🇮🇹

Our students are currently at the Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) Conference, collaborating with peers from around the world, debating global issues, and stepping confidently into their roles as young leaders.

This is Montessori in action.

At Westside, we prepare children not just for school, but for life, nurturing independence, confidence, and a sense of purpose that extends far beyond the classroom.

Curious what this could look like for your child? We’d love to connect.

“My point of view isn’t your point of view. I don’t know….I can’t see what you can see.”

Two nine year olds, figuring out something many adults are still working on.

We each see the world from our own spot.

Maybe that’s where so many of our conflicts begin… when we forget that. When we assume someone should see what we see.

What if instead of correcting, we got curious?
“What do you see?”
“Help me understand your side.”

It doesn’t mean we need to agree. It just means we’re willing to make space for each other. 🤍

I love being privy to these quiet and contemplative conversations between my children. I learn so much from them.

At Westside Montessori School, a dressing frame is an opportunity for connection with a peer, along with building independence, confidence, coordination, concentration, and that very powerful belief: I can do this myself. 🙌

“These very children reveal to us the most vital need of their development, saying, “Help me to do it alone!’“
Dr. Maria Montessori | From Childhood to Adolescence

Signs are one of the earliest ways children use writing to communicate with the world around them. We love the colourful and meaningful signs that our students create and post. Signs are commonly created by children in the late stage of Casa and into the Elementary years, once they have the knowledge and skills, along with confidence, to make their message heard. Of course, our Middle School students often have messages to deliver too 😉

By creating signs, children:
📝 Practice writing with purpose
🧠 Develop problem-solving skills
🎭 Express creativity and independence
👫 Engage in real-world literacy

In a Montessori classroom, collaboration is at the heart of learning. Children work together, solve problems, and teach one another in a way that fosters independence and respect. Unlike traditional schooling, where learning is often passive and teacher-led, Montessori allows students to take an active role in their education.

By working in mixed-age groups, children develop leadership skills, empathy, and a deep understanding of concepts through hands-on exploration. When education is built on collaboration rather than competition, children thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

March Break is a time for rest, I know I am looking to slow the pace a bit for the next few weeks, and while I hope my team fully embraces some well-deserved R & R, I know some will return with a beautiful item or two for their classrooms.

In a Montessori classroom, it's often the smallest items that make the biggest impact. A delicate set of wooden spoons from a market in Morocco, a vibrant textile from a village in Mexico, these thoughtful treasures invite curiosity, spark conversation, and inspire learning. They're also a great reason to get the atlas out, create a map, draw a flag, and on and on the children take their learning!

Our students are drawn to these special and unique details, and each item enriches their experience, connecting them to the wider world in meaningful ways. ❤️

“As women achieve power, the barriers will fall. As society sees what women can do, as women see what women can do, there will be more women out there doing things, and we’ll all be better off for it.” - Ruth Bader Ginsburg

On this International Women's Day, we celebrate the strength, curiosity, and resilience of girls and women. 🌍

In Montessori classrooms, we nurture independence, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning - the skills that empower girls to become the leaders, innovators, and changemakers our world needs. By providing inclusive, supportive environments, we ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Commit to uplifting and encouraging the girls and women in your communities, as they will change the world.

🔎✍️ In our Elementary classrooms, research and writing are essential parts of learning! Montessori students explore topics that spark their curiosity, gather information from a variety of sources, and express their discoveries through writing. With the freedom to follow their interests and the guidance to develop strong research skills, they become confident, independent thinkers.

We love watching their ideas take shape on paper! 📖✨

Their peers love learning from the many presentations delivered to the class by our knowledgeable experts. 🤓
