Day one. 🩵

A few nerves. A lot of excitement. Familiar faces reconnecting, new friendships beginning, and children finding their way back into the rhythm of the classroom.

Choosing work. Carrying a tray. Rolling a rug. Preparing snack. Helping a friend. Sitting together at the table. Moving through a carefully prepared environment that says, in so many quiet ways, this place belongs to you.

Montessori reminds us that children build themselves through purposeful work, independence, movement and connection. Our job is to prepare the environment, offer a steady relationship, and trust the child to find their way.

And today, they did.

The classrooms are alive again. What a beautiful first day back at Westside. ✨

Cozy rugs are an intentional part of the Montessori classroom. They help create a space that feels warm, calm and welcoming, more like a thoughtfully prepared home than a traditional classroom.

Rugs also have a few practical purposes. Children use small floor mats to define their individual work space, while larger rugs create inviting areas for reading, community gatherings, and conversation. Soft textures absorb sound and reduce the sensory “busyness” of a room.

Most importantly, they communicate something about how we see children: their environment should be beautiful, comfortable and designed with their needs in mind. 🩵

Meet Willa Grant, Principal of our Dufferin Grove Campus 🌿

Willa joined Westside in September 2021, when we opened our Lower Elementary program at Dufferin Grove. In September 2023, she moved into Upper Elementary and has continued to grow as an educator, leader and valued member of our community ever since.

With more than a decade of Montessori experience and a Master’s Degree in Montessori Education, Willa brings warmth, humour, experience and a deep commitment to children and community to everything she does.

I’m so excited to work alongside her as she enters into this next chapter as Principal of Dufferin Grove. 🩵

A day spent at Centre Island with our students, families, and staff is the perfect way to celebrate the end of another amazing year together. School year #18!

We enjoyed ferry rides, playground adventures, dips in the lake, a BBQ catered by our Middle School, lots of ice cream, great conversations, many, many hugs and so much laughter.

Thank you to everyone who made this year such a great one. I hope you have a wonderful summer, and I can’t wait to see what next year brings! 🩵

But first, a bit of a rest. 😴

Our students are currently at the Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) Conference, collaborating with peers from around the world, debating global issues, and stepping confidently into their roles as young leaders.

This is Montessori in action.
