At our Tekes Havaat Bikurim celebration, we were so proud to welcome our newest community members, our new babies, into our school community.

As we celebrate Shavuot, the holiday of receiving the Torah, we are reminded of the values at its very heart: kindness, generosity, and caring for those in need. Our whole school came together in song to bless these precious little ones, while also bringing bikkurim-inspired fruit donations for those in need, turning our learning into action and helping our students live the values of Torah in a tangible way.

The Act of Remembrance

Parashat Shemini, which we read this past Shabbat, dealing as it does with the deaths of Aharon's two older sons, connects us to Yom HaShoah veHaGevurah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Our act of remembrance on Yom HaShoah bridges between two different Torah commandments about remembrance - the "Vehigadeta l'vincha" of telling our children about the Exodus from Egypt, and the "Zachor" commandment to never forget the evil of Amalek, raising the question: what is the goal of remembrance?

The remembrance we engage in on this day serves two purposes. First, to remember the individuals and the entire Jewish world that was lost: communities, culture, Torah learning, a living tapestry of European Jewry. This remembrance at once respects the dead, and immortalizes them.

And, second, to remember and never forget the atrocities that were committed - to learn about the "banality of evil" and recall how an entire society lost its moral compass. Today, too, we find ourselves forced to face similar moral outrages taking place in the world.

For many years, the byword of Yom HaShoah was "Never again," coupled with seeing the State of Israel as a shield for the Jewish People. Yet there is further depth to remembrance: it requires internalizing lessons learned, taking responsibility, and choosing to do good - to do better.

We learn from the lessons of the Righteous Among the Nations about moral fortitude, and we ask ourselves: what would we have done? What will we do, today? Remembrance invites us, too, to connect with the world of Jewish life that was destroyed and, through doing so, to strengthen our own identities.

Just as with the story of the Exodus from Egypt, we have the opportunity to turn commemoration into living memory, seeing remembrance as a power that drives responsibility, values, and action. Today, the eldest child at AHS in each family will be bringing home a candle labelled with the name of an individual who perished in the Shoah.

May we remember, learn, and take action to build a brighter future through remembrance.

Am Yisrael Chai,

This is more than just a project, it’s their history, their people, their story. Our Grade 6 students brought their family stories to life in a meaningful gallery walk, reminding us that every story matters.
