As this event was a huge hit last year, we decided to bring back “Equitea Talks” on March 5th from 6:00-7:30PM on zoom. This year’s theme is ‘Navigating the STEM Race Gap’ to highlight the barriers BIPOC face in the STEM field and how to overcome them.
This event will have a similar format as last year where we will bring 4 Women in STEM speakers:⠀

1. Allow them to introduce themselves, inform us about their educational and career path and a little bit more about themselves. ⠀
2. Then we will follow it up with a panel discussion mediated by a member of AUWS and the opportunity for the attendees to ask any questions they have. ⠀

We are able to bring phenomenal women in STEM thanks to the help from our wonderful Career Education Specialist for Faculty of Science, & Campus Engagement Specialist Maurice Fernandes and Mark Whitten respectively. These bright and intelligent women, all have diverse backgrounds and experiences in their career journeys within the STEM field allowing our attendees to hear unique perspectives and stories about their career journeys within this field and what successes and obstacles they faced. ⠀ ⠀
Come on out to our event with your desire to listen to our speakers, ask questions and be open-minded to the many unknown or known opportunities you can choose to pursue after completing your degree! ⠀⠀

The event will be held through Zoom. To register for the event please complete the form linked below.

Happy Pride Month!🏳️‍🌈

In everything we do, AUWS is committed to celebrating the diversity and inclusiveness of the LGBTQIA+ Community.

This month, and every month, we embrace diversity, in all its forms. It is important to bring awareness and recognize the LGBTQIA+ Community in STEM, as it is vital for the future of change and innovation.

We stand together with the Black Lives Matter Movement. As women in STEM, we can relate to the feeling of being isolated, singled out, and constantly having to prove ourselves worthy. Black women in STEM are the most underrepresented, as only 1 out of 20 women employed as scientists and engineers are black. Systemic racism is unfortunately present in our society and within the STEM field, and often never spoken about. We need to come together and demand the same opportunities that should already exist for our black colleagues.

The tragic death of George Floyd sparked this conversation. Lives like his should not have been lost in order for us all to hear the voices of our black colleagues, friends, and family. We stand for justice and equality. We stand for change.

As members of our community, it is important to use our voices to create this change. Speak up for those who can not and help where possible. Support organizations accepting donations, sign petitions, and educate yourself. Keep listening and keep learning. Ask questions, listen to podcasts, watch films and documentaries, or even read books. There are countless ways to help. Even the smallest act will lead to change.
