Hello everyone,

We are getting ready for another adventure-filled year and are trying our best to provide you with a stress free outlet during these times. We are excited to announce that our new team of Directors for the 2020-2021 academic school year has been selected. Thank you so much to everyone who applied, we were thrilled with the applications we received and look forward to working with you all. In light of current events, TCOS would like to emphasize that we stand with and support all of your voices. We hear you and are actively implementing new ideas and re-evaluating our constitution to ensure an all-inclusive environment for our students. This is especially important as renewed discussion and energy is bringing out positive change in ending systemic anti-black racism. We will be part of this positive change, please see our post in the Trinity group for the steps we are taking. As we are now a newly levied club, we wanted to thank all of you for making this possible and for supporting our efforts to bring the community together and improve mental health.

We now have the opportunity to expand our event sizes which allows more students to come out and enjoy the outdoors with us. We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy and can’t wait to see all of your faces again soon.

Sincerely,
Mirielle Korting, President
Maya Sternthal, Vice President
Shashwat Aggarwal, Treasurer

Hello everyone,

As avid adventurers and lovers of the natural environment, The Trinity College Outdoors Society (TCOS) is determined to ensure that all members of Trinity College feel included and valued in our club. The 2020-2021 academic year will mark the beginning of our time as a levied club and we believe that with this levy comes a responsibility to ensure that our use of college funds is done in the most responsible way possible. Two of these responsibilities are modifying our constitution to reflect a stronger stance on diversity and inclusion and amplifying the voices of BIPOC students in our community and in the greater community of adventurers.

TCOS will modify elements of our constitution to emphasize the club's dedication to the promotion of diversity and inclusion in outdoor activities. These elements include:

The addition of a fourth objective to the club's constitution:
- Promote outdoor activities to ALL students in the Trinity
College community, especially to BIPOC students and other historically marginalized members of the community, in an attempt to dismantle historical tendencies of exclusion in outdoor activities and the outdoor industry.

- The addition of a new responsibility to all of the club's executive members (President, Vice President, Treasurer):
Responsible for the promotion of diversity and inclusion in all TCOS events, initiatives, meetings, and formation of future executive teams.

- The addition of a new responsibility to all of the club's directors:
Responsible for the promotion of diversity and inclusion in all TCOS events, initiatives, and meetings.

While TCOS has always strived to provide an inclusive environment for outdoor enthusiasts, it is an ugly myth that in the greater world, green spaces and outdoor activities are accessible and welcoming to all. Historically, outdoor sports such as skiing and mountaineering were accessible to only a small portion of the North American population; Outdoor activities were historically for the white and privileged. Unfortunately, many of these trends persist today as seen in the failure of outdoor equipment companies to advertise their products to ALL segments of the population and by the unwelcoming atmosphere that many BIPOC are faced with on the trail, the mountain, the water, and in the climbing gym. Natural spaces are for all human beings, but this notion has not been upheld.

As one of our first initiatives to promote diversity and inclusion in outdoor activities, TCOS will work to amplify the voices of BIPOC outdoor enthusiasts. We will share the work of individuals, organizations, and initiatives aiming to ensure that outdoor spaces and activities are truly accessible and welcoming to EVERYONE. If you would like TCOS to promote a particular resource amplifying the voices of BIPOC adventurers, a historical resource on the social history of outdoor recreation, or have further ideas of how TCOS can work to make our events more inclusive and accessible for all, we encourage you to reach out to our executive team.

Sincerely,
Mirielle Korting, President
Maya Sternthal, Vice President
Shashwat Aggarwal, Treasurer
