The Nookie Women like s*x too. The Nookie isn’t your typical s*x shop. That means we do things a little differently. We call it a sensuality shop. We only opened in 2017.

Our award-winning founder, Veronica Kazoleas, is a former healthcare executive with a Master's in Social Psychology. In fact, we think we're so different that we don’t even consider ourselves a s*x shop. And we don’t think of our products as s*x toys. We see them as pleasure products. But our foundations were laid in 2002 when Veronica was researching s*xual fantasies at the University of Alberta. It struck Veronica how few women felt empowered to assert their desires. She thought this stemmed from both the social expectation that women don't have s*x for the sake of their own pleasure and the lack of accessible resources for s*xual exploration. To address the first factor, Veronica advocated for a change in dialogue around female s*xuality. Her innovative views resulted in an invitation to speak on the need for s*x research reform at the 2006 annual meeting of the Canadian Psychological Association. For the second factor, she envisioned a welcoming space that supported people throughout their s*xual journeys. Veronica believed her vision was an important step in promoting s*xual wellness, but she didn't think the business would reach its potential under the social climate of the early 2000s. So she left academia in 2006 to pursue a career in healthcare reform, all the while dreaming of one day opening The Nookie. Flash ahead to the wild success of the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise. Veronica viewed this as representing a widespread change in women’s openness to exploring their s*xuality. This shift led Veronica to end her career as a healthcare executive and move across Canada to launch The Nookie. After a year of research and planning - involving everything from attending European s*x toy conferences to inadvertently signing up for an o**y - The Nookie was born.

Oh hey there. My mid-life pause is running away with me in the best kind of way. Which means I'm more delayed in getting the e-commerce back online than I planned. Friends. We’re evolving into an online only model.

My vision for The Nookie has always been about reducing pleasure stigma for women. Physical retail was the right vehicle for that when we opened in 2017. But with retail-wide staffing challenges, changes in consumer behaviour, and ongoing issues with sketchy landlords, the physical shop is holding me back.

This is not goodbye. I’m closing our Yorkville location to focus on finding a home for my manuscript, building our online presence, expanding my s*x education and media appearances, and increasing community outreach. 

Our last day for in-store shopping will be on or before May 21. For now, we’re hoping you’ll help us clear some inventory before we go. Moving sale starts now at 30% off in-store and online.
