Recognizing Excellence in Education 🙌

The President's University Wide Teaching Award goes to professors who have made an incredible change across York University. This year’s recipients were professors Wahid Khan and Prilly Bicknell-Hersco for their equity- and inclusion-focused education.

The Governor General’s Silver medal was awarded to BEd graduate Vanessa Otello for her excellence in scholastic achievements and academic merit.

The Faculty of Education is beyond proud of the contributions these individuals have made and wishes them the best in their future endeavors!

Congratulations to Christopher R. Bratty, this year's recipient of the Honorary Doctorate in Law at the Faculty of Education's Convocation ceremony.

Chris was recognized for his exemplary work in real estate and philanthropy. His visionary leadership and deep community engagement have profoundly shaped urban development and advanced education across Ontario.

Why is high school attendance and participation so low, and how can it be fixed?

A new study by Faculty of Education’s Gillian Parekh and Robert Brown found that the most vulnerable students are hit hardest, and that early absence patterns in Grade 9 have measurable links to whether students go on to post-secondary education.

From hospital menus to community teaching kitchens, Education PhD student Rick Powless is creating cross-cultural change through food.

As a Red Seal-certified chef, he focuses on making Indigenous food affordable, accessible, and culturally meaningful. He has worked with Compass Group Canada to bring Indigenous meals into Ontario hospitals and has shared Indigenous cooking through his teaching kitchens, making sure to include the cultural stories and knowledge that accompany each dish.

The FESA: Faculty of Education Students' Association - York University received significant recognition from York University after a successful academic year.

The council was awarded the Most Improved Student Government Award and the Keeley Mitchell Award for Campus Engagement. Former FESA President, Devonte Ellis, was presented with the Outstanding Student Government Leader Award and the Robert Everett Exceptional Leadership in Student Governance Award as well.

Congratulations, FESA! Your hard work and commitment last year truly made a positive impact on the student body, in and out of faculty!

On May 21st, the Faculty of Education held their annual End-of-Year Celebration with a focus on the arts and scholarship.

The theme of this year’s event was arts and scholarship, and featured a variety of engaging presentations on the art of scholarship and pedagogy, while exploring the many ways artistic practices can deepen understanding, foster connection, and enrich learning experiences. The events also featured the presentation of two awards by Dean Robert Savage, recognizing excellence in research and teaching within the faculty. The event was informative and celebratory, creating a positive end to a successful year.
