During the last assembly of the year, the STEM team gave certificates to students who participated in the Gauss Math Contest, a University of Waterloo math competition for students in Grades 6, 7, and 8.
Preparation for the contest is done in class as students learn how to read questions closely, and utilize information to solve and reason. In addition to practice problem solving, participation builds confidence with contest math, and get a taste of the wider CEMC contest sequence from Waterloo. The certificates were given out to the top 10 students of both contests. The Gauss contest is less about speed drills and more about reasoning, patterns, and creative thinking.

Each Friday, as part of the physcial education program, the Junior School students go to a local playground to move, laugh, and play. Sports are important, though the benefits of free play are also well known, and are a key component to developing social skills, gross motor movement control, and just being aware of ourselves in the world.

This year Tom Bell and the choir of St. James' Cathedral welcomed the inaugural cohort of Giles Bryant Choral Scholars, Henri '27, on the left and Austin, '26, on the right. These are students at RSGC in the choral music program who receive a scholarship to sing with the professionals at the Cathedral. It's a chance to boost their training with fast-paced work, learning and performing new repertoire every week.
Thursday, June 4, was the last rehearsal before the summer for the Scholarship holders, a bittersweet moment for Austin, '26, who graduates from RSGC this week. Among the university options available to Austin next year is Trinity College, U of T. Trinity is one of only two university colleges in Canada with Anglican chapels featuring active choirs that award choral scholarships, and the choir at Trinity College Chapel is directed by the same Tom Bell from St. James' Cathedral. So next year could bring plenty more opportunities to see Austin at work.

Today the Grade 7s and 8s took part in a Living Library engaging with "living books"—people willing to share their experiences—in conversations with "readers,” the student participants. The conversations explore various topics, including personal experiences, cultural backgrounds, and lived realities, with the goal of fostering empathy, challenging stereotypes, and promoting understanding. Living Libraries create a safe and respectful environment where individuals can share their stories and engage in meaningful conversations.
We’d like to express our deep gratitude to the volunteers who joined us today to share their stories. They represented a wide variety of social services, many of whom have standing relationships with at RSGC, either through Days of Service or our weekly volunteer initiatives.
They included:
Youth, adult, and family shelters
Food Banks
Books Bank
Indigenous Outreach Services
Disaster Relief & Humanitarian Aid
Urban Agriculture Initiatives
Social Services for the Unhoused
