Reflecting on 70 Years Since the 1956 Hungarian Revolution
Thank you to everyone who joined us for “Revolution, Refugees, and Historical Memory: Seventy Years since 1956 in Hungary.”
Over two days, scholars, students, and members of the community came together to reflect on the Revolution, the experiences of Hungarian refugees, its significance during the Cold War, and its enduring place in historical memory.
The symposium also featured a book launch, film screening, and the Hungarian Exodus exhibit.

Professor Robert Austin has been awarded a Jean Monnet Chair by the European Commission through the Erasmus+ programme.

The three-year initiative, Enlarging Europe, Upholding Justice: Advancing the Rule of Law Standards Across EU Applicants and Candidates, will advance research, teaching and public engagement on the rule of law and transitional justice in the context of European Union enlargement.

The initiative will also create new opportunities for students at the Centre for European and Eurasian Studies (CEES), including:

👉 For-credit workshops with leading European scholars and practitioners
👉 Funded research traineeships on EU-focused projects
👉 Global Classroom opportunities with universities in Europe
👉 Specialized EU research training
👉 Connections with European scholars and institutions
👉 An international workshop in Toronto bringing together students and scholars from Canada and Europe

“The Jean Monnet Chair in Rule of Law allows us to build on this and expand to our European Affairs undergrads. As well, we are able to offer some traineeships for our undergraduates,” says Austin.

The initiative will strengthen CEES’s connections across Europe while giving U of T students more opportunities to learn, research and connect across borders.

📚✨ Celebrating the launch of Professor Robert Austin's new book Enver Hoxha: Twentieth-Century Tyrant!

On September 24, CEES Associate Director and Professor Robert Austin and co-author Artan R. Hoxha celebrated the launch of their new book, Enver Hoxha: Twentieth-Century Tyrant.

The first full-length biography of Albania’s longtime communist leader, the book offers a fascinating and deeply researched examination of Hoxha’s life, political rule, and legacy, while exploring the nature of dictatorship and Albania’s place in the history of the Cold War.

The book was also recently named by The New Statesman as one of “The Best Non-Fiction to Read This Year.”

In 2022, in response to russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, PJP began supporting Ukraine-based scholars with non-residential scholarships that give them opportunities to continue their professional activities during the times when many careers were interrupted. Since then, 58 scholars have been supported through these non-residential engagements.
