Here is our next blog: How to Explain Artificial Intelligence to Adult Learners

Artificial intelligence, or AI, can feel like a big and confusing topic. Many people hear about AI in the news, see it online, or worry about how it may affect jobs and daily life. Some learners may have tried a chatbot. Others may say, “I do not use AI.”

But many adult learners are already encountering AI every day.

AI can influence the products people see while shopping online. It can help choose videos or posts on social media. It may be part of online banking, customer-service chats, travel apps, maps, job-search websites, translation tools, and information searches.

For adult literacy practitioners, the goal does not need to be teaching technical terms or turning learners into AI experts. A better starting point is helping learners notice AI, ask questions, protect their information, and make informed choices. Truth and reconciliation is not something that can be marked by a single day. It is an ongoing commitment to learning the truth, listening to Indigenous voices, and understanding the history and experiences that have shaped communities across Canada.

Today, MTML honours the children who never returned home from residential schools, the Survivors, and the families and communities who continue to carry their stories and experiences.

We recognize that meaningful reconciliation requires continued reflection and action. This includes making space to learn from Indigenous Peoples, supporting Indigenous-led work, and considering how each of us can contribute to respectful relationships and stronger communities.

Today, we remember.
We listen.
We continue learning.

🧡 Every Child Matters.

Today, MTML celebrated International Literacy Day online, and we’re still thinking about the learning journeys shared with us.

We heard stories of hard work, persistence, and progress. There were smiles, tears of joy, and moments that reminded us why learning matters.

To every learner who shared their journey: thank you. Your determination deserves to be celebrated. To the instructors who support learners every step of the way: thank you for your patience, care, and hard work. These stories remind us why adult learning opportunities matter. Learning does not have an expiry date. Every adult deserves the chance to build skills, pursue goals, and take a next step that matters to them—with support and encouragement along the way.

On behalf of Metro Toronto Movement for Literacy, congratulations to all the learners and instructors we celebrated today. We’re grateful we could share this moment with you.

Our next blog: Why Investing in Adult Learning Strengthens Local Communities: Picture a mother in a small Canadian town who never finished high school. She signs up for a free adult literacy class at her local community centre. A few months later, she can read her child's report card, fill out a job application without help, and feel confident speaking up at a parent-teacher meeting. Multiply this one small story by thousands of learners across Canada, and a bigger truth comes into focus: when we invest in adult learning, we don't just change one life — we strengthen the whole community around it. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BR5VidVZOC0F1mwcMWjWoAUuyC_-iCcY/view?usp=drive_link
