Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we honour and celebrate the diverse cultures, heritage, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across the country. At St. Mike’s we reflect on our relationships past, present and future with Indigenous peoples, seeking ones based on respect, partnership, and recognition of rights.

In honour of this day, we spoke with Regis St. Michael's Faculty of Theology PhD student Noah MacDonald about his transformational research into theological wisdom in Anishinaabe communities, reclaiming Indigenous identities as a Catholic, and establishing reciprocal exchanges of knowledge.

His work is shaped by his own experience as a member of Michipicoten First Nation and as a canon lawyer at the Archdiocese of Toronto.

St. Michael’s graduate Zhengqi Chen switched from commerce to economics so he could focus more on research. His research work, assisting three economics professors, led him to multiple options for graduate studies.

Chen says St. Mike's provided him with a supportive environment where he could comfortably connect with professors and seek guidance beyond the classroom. “Those experiences played an important role in helping me grow academically and prepare for graduate studies and research,” he says.

He graduated with a Specialist in Financial Economics degree from the Department of Economics. With PhD offers in Asia and Master’s offers on the table in North America, he has his pick as to where he will pursue graduate studies.
