SCHOOL IS CLOSED FOR THE SUMMER, BUT THE WORK TO SAVE MODEL SCHOOL FUNDING & SUPPORT CONTINUES. Please see their message below and join the upcoming meeting.
We are a group of parents and school council members from various Model Schools within TDSB. TDSB established the Model Schools program 20 years ago to support communities with higher socio-economic need. There are now 150 elementary Model Schools within TDSB and your school is one of them.
Currently, each Model School receives targeted additional support. In most schools, this includes funding for field trips, an assigned community support worker, and an additional teacher and administrator. The central office also provides extra support for Model Schools, including facilitating Toronto Public Health hearing, dental and vision clinics.
In the budget for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year, TDSB has completely eliminated funding for the Model School program. This is despite the fact that TDSB will continue to receive from the province over $130 million in funds designated to support Model Schools and other equity initiatives. You can learn more about Model Schools and Premier Ford’s cuts here.
We can protect the Model School program by working together. We have created a resource kit on our linktree (see comments) with:
Sample phone scripts for calling Doug Ford
Sample emails to send to Doug Ford
Flyers to pass out at your school
Petition for parents to sign to show their opposition to the cuts
We also are convening a Zoom call with Model School community members on July 14 at 6 pm to share updates and plan how to best work together to protect our schools. Register at this link. https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/m7C-LM4gR9SH_Jbctmqsrw #/registration

Among this year’s TDSB’s Excellence Award winners was Ms. April de Melo, the grade 4/5 gifted teacher at Selwyn. This is an enormous accomplishment and well deserved.

Ready or not, the end of the school year is almost here.
A late but very big thank you to the organizers, volunteers and families who helped to make the fun fair a success! It is our biggest fundraiser for our school and we are so grateful to the community.

While the Selwyn community garden continues to flourish, we have been made aware of some unexpected visitors to the space. We are aware of their presence and currently in discussions about how to handle the situation.
Please note that while these surprise visitors may look frightening, children should not be afraid of their presence and are welcome to touch them.

🌱🌱 the school is a buzz with gardening activities and we are receiving lots of positive feedback from kids and the community about what these outdoor learning opportunities mean for our school.
Students are digging in and learning about pollinator gardening and companion planting like three sisters 🌱🌱
