Curriculum:
The curriculum is focused on methodology in translation as well as research for the correct use of terminology. Professional translators typically translate from a second language into their first or most proficient language. If English is the first language of the applicant, or his most proficient language, then he will be placed in the ‘anglophone’ program and trained to translate from French into English. Students whose first or stronger language is French will follow the ‘francophone’ program, translating from English to French. Translation software taught:
• SDL/Trados
• LogiTerm
• MultiCorpora
Students can also gain experience and earn course credits by doing professional internships with Canada’s Federal Translation Bureau. On-line entrance exam:
An on-line exam is available year round, through prior registration with the School of Translation for access. The exam is entirely written and includes a 500-word essay and a 300-word summary in the dominant language (English or French) of the candidate, as well as 3 paragraph answers in your second language (English or French). The maximum time allotted is 4 hours. In addition to passing the Translation exam, the student must be admitted to or currently be studying at Glendon to enter the Translation program. If you are not already a Glendon or York student, you are encouraged to write the exam before you apply to the University. Further Certification:
The BA in Translation from Glendon College is recognized by the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO). A candidate for certification in Ontario must hold a university degree in translation recognized by the ATIO in order to qualify to take the examination for certification.
