Are kids today more emotionally intelligent than the kids of generations past? Are they maturing and developing at a younger age?

Dr. Shyamala Kiru shares her thoughts on The betterHUMAN Podcast…

How are you reframing your perspective on the things that are out of your control?

We all have the ability to change the way we see or perceive things. To look at a situation that perhaps didn’t go our way and ask:
“What happened?”
“What was the outcome?”
“What could I have done differently?”

Reframing is all about taking yourself out of the initial reaction or emotion of the situation, and looking at logically (at Witz we call this Activating Your ADULT). What are the facts of the situation? What was the outcome? Is there anything you can change next time to make it a more successful interaction.

Stop focusing on what is out of your control and reframe it in a positive way.

Over the last few years, mental health has become a huge conversation in the corporate world.

Organizations have started taking it upon themselves to educate their team members on the importance of mental health, and leaders have taken on the responsibility of continuing and reinforcing the conversation.

But leaders can only do so much. We aren’t mind readers. Team members also have a responsibility to speak up. To voice their feelings and concerns. To communicate with their leaders about what they need and where they’re at.

It’s a 50/50 relationship. As a leader, I commit to communicating with my team, but I also need them to meet me halfway.

What’s your interviewing style?

For me, I’m all about going with my gut. I don’t follow a structure. I don’t have a set list of questions. I’m operate solely on instinct.

Thankfully, I’m also the last person to interview a candidate, so my team has already asked all of those technical, functional, experience-based interview questions.

By the time the candidate gets to me, I’m really looking to get to know them from a personality side of things. Will they fit into our corporate community? Will they gel with the team? Do they jive with our purpose? Are they looking for a long-term growth position or a stepping stone, short-term stint. These are the things I focus on in interviews.

How do you go about interviewing for new talent?

We all have a responsibility to be better tomorrow than we were today.

We’re responsible for being a better parent, a better teammate, a betterLEADER, a betterHUMAN…

This isn’t to say that you were an absolute monster of a human today, but I’m sure there was a least one instance that you could have handled better... one conversation… interaction… scenario that could have had a better result.

Take a step back to reflect on your day and see where things can improve for next time. Then, make a conscious decision to do something differently tomorrow to improve upon who you were today.

If it doesn’t come naturally, assertiveness is hard work. Don’t be disheartened. Keep practicing. There are so many advantages to being assertive in all of your personal and professional interactions.

It may be hard, but it will be worth it!

Everyone’s always so focused on how to overcome fear.

Our fears exist for a reason. A lot of the time we’re protecting ourselves from something. But what we’re usually doing is protecting ourselves from our own perceptions or past experiences.

So the question becomes how do we overcome fears that may be completely self-imposed? I think sometimes it's not about overcoming that fear at all, but rather recognizing it and then ignoring it. Maybe we've got it backwards. Maybe it's not about overcoming fear. Maybe it's about leaning into the fear and stepping off the ledge anyway.

How should we deal with fear? We have to push through with resilience. And if we push through, maybe the outcome will be that we’ll overcome that fear.

So you took this week to grind.

Now this is your gentle Friday reminder to find time this weekend to decompress.

“But we just had a break over the holidays” you say? I hear you and I fall into this thinking a lot. But that was a month ago, and with the January we’ve had you likely need to take a breath, relax and regroup.

It’s ok to take a break. You’ll come back stronger next week if you do.

Did you know that, on average, only 12% of people will finish an online course?

Digital Marketing Master and Online Education Guru Mike Weiss shared this shocking statistic with me recently on The betterHUMAN Podcast. I was shocked! For a $250 billion industry that’s growing at about 17% per annum… that’s not a great result.

If such a small number of people are actually benefiting from these online courses (and some of them are fantastic), then it means that something in the system is broken.

Have you finished an online course recently? What made you stick around until you finished? What hooked you enough to keep going? Have you started a course that you never finished? Why didn’t you see it through?

I’d love to know your thoughts!
