The German International School Toronto is a private, co-educational, German immersion school which provides students with a unique international perspective by combining the best of both the Canadian and German curricula. Today, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we reflect on the history of residential schools in Canada and honour survivors, their families, and communities.

Thank you to GIST parent Axell Woodbeck for joining us today and providing trauma-informed programming grounded in Indigenous knowledge and teachings. Axell spoke with our students about the values of truth and reconciliation and the students learned the meaning and significance of a Pow Wow.

A postcard from Camp Pine Crest 🏕️💌

Grades 3–7 have been having tons of fun in beautiful Muskoka! With the sun shining all week, they’ve been spending their days swimming, canoeing, learning archery and more. The clear skies at night have even made for some great stargazing ✨🤩

We can't wait to hear all their stories when they're back!

And they’re off! 🚌 Students in Grades 3–7 will be spending the week at Camp Pine Crest in Muskoka. It will be a great time of canoeing, campfires, and exploring nature in beautiful Ontario. We hope they have the best trip!

The first-ever GISToliade, a school spirit day created by students as part of the “Let’s Go GIST” project week! 🎉

Students in Grades 1–12 were divided into cross-grade teams and spent the day taking on different challenges together. It was a great opportunity for students to get to know classmates from other grades while working together as a team. 🤝

What a fun way to kick off the school year - awesome job to all the students and teachers who planned the event! 💙

Bonjour hi from Montreal! Our Principal Rouven Hollmann, Business Manager Thomas Pfanner and Board Member Holger Löwendorf represented our school at last week's regional network meeting at the Alexander von Humboldt German International School Montreal. Seven German International Schools across the US and Canada came together to share experiences, learn from one another, and work on solutions for our common challenges.

Thanks for the great preparation by Carsten Apsel for the Heads of Schools, Tina Haarbusch for the Business Managers, and Shamala Hinrichsen for the Boards, as well as the in-depth discussions with representatives from the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad (ZfA) in Germany. We also thank Dr. Tim Elrick for his presentation on AI in schools and administrations, and Montreal's Principal Delia Simons for hosting us so graciously.

We were so happy to have our entire school community together last Thursday for our annual Welcome Back Picnic! It was wonderful to welcome our new families and staff and catch up with our returning families and staff. What a perfect way to spend time together and enjoy the late summer weather here in Toronto!

Die Einschulung 🍎🎒✏️

Our new Grade 1 class was officially welcomed to their first day of school this week with the German tradition of the Einschulung, a special ceremony where new students and their families come together to celebrate this important milestone.

The students received their colourful Schultüten, filled with special treats and school supplies. We wish our new Grade 1s and their class teacher, Ms. Scarlett, a wonderful start to the school year!
