Students created their own jobs/roles in nature - we brainstormed types of jobs, and tried to use alliteration to match the role to something in the environment, like our Peddler of Puddles. We then made statues depicting these roles, followed by bringing them to life and introducing ourselves as the jobs we took on to each other.

Story Drama Tips and Tricks: Visual Displays! (AKA ARTWORK!)
We Are Definitely Human

Three aliens crash land onto Earth and meet the best of humanity! Of course they can’t tell anyone they’re aliens, because they are definitely human! They are from… Europe. Thank goodness, they met Mr. Li and his community of wonderful people.
STORY DRAMA EXERCISE:
use artwork to visually immerse your students into a story before you even start to read! I worked with a kindergarten class last week and we created a mural of what the planet looked like that the aliens might have come from. The book does not tell us about the planet, the kids got to use their imaginations and think about what it may look like, and why the aliens might have left. We then hung the mural up on the wall and used it as a destination point when we imagined the aliens flying back home. It was so much fun and their ideas were just flowing! They made up the name of the planet, and added so many wonderful landforms and homes and colours and and and and and….. Kindergarten kids are the absolute best at imagining, I adore them! When kids have ownership over what a picture book setting might look like, they quickly immerse themselves into the story as whole because they built the world!

Today, I presented my process drama “The Town That Needs Us” at the ECOO (educational computing organization of Ontario) conference “ dream forward, steam ahead!” a few of us were there representing CODE and leading workshops on integrating drama into science and inquiry programming. It was another wonderful day and it’s always a privilege to work with educators who may not have considered the benefits of the arts in their science and math pedagogy before this experience, and now are open to teaching in different ways! It is beneficial to have a variety of teaching strategies and access points for your students in your back pocket.
