In just under two weeks, we’ll celebrate International Day of the Girl on October 11. This day is a powerful reminder of the importance of gender equality in education, and the positive impact it has on our world when girls can learn too.
We know you understand the importance of equal access to education for girls who are living in refugee camps and contexts. On this day we acknowledge the tremendous effort that girls make to overcome the barriers that could prevent them from attending school.
When a girl can reach her full potential, so can her community
When they have the right tools, girls can become powerful agents of change. That’s why WUSC work in partnership with community-based organizations around the world to design, lead, and implement solutions to promote girls’ education and empowerment in a way that’s unique to every context. Border Control, Tech & Human Rights:
Thanks to funding recently provided by Connected Minds, there are 5 fully funded (regular cost $1,075) positions available in the 2024 Centre for Refugee Studies Summer Course (June 3-7) for York University students (including Osgoode Hall Law School and Osgoode Professional Development) and Queen’s University students, as well as recent graduates.
For over two decades, York University’s Centre for Refugee Studies has run an internationally acclaimed, non-credit professional development Summer Course that brings together practitioners, policy makers, researchers, and students to learn together about the most pressing forced migration and refugee issues.
This year’s Summer Course, which is being offered in collaboration with Osgoode Hall Law School’s Refugee Law Laboratory, will focus on research, policy, and practices at the intersections of forced migration and technology. To adapt to growing numbers of people on the move, institutions that manage borders and refugee adjudication processes are deploying new technologies. In this context, the Summer Course program will examine the problems and opportunities presented by new technologies for refugee status determination systems, human rights advocates, border management officials, and people on the move. We will bring policy makers, adjudicators, researchers, refugees, and NGO actors together to develop ideas about how technology, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, can be used to increase fairness, protect rights, and help address forced migration at scale. Featuring presentations, panels discussions, and break-out sessions, participants will be invited to think critically and thoughtfully about how cutting-edge technologies can, should, and should not be used in the forced migration space.
All participants who complete the full course receive a York University Centre for Refugee Studies Summer Course Certificate.
Co-taught by Simon Wallace and Petra Molnar, with assistance from Professor Sean Rehaag, the course will be offered virtually and in person in downtown Toronto (near Bloor & Spadina) from June 3 to 7.
