The 19th Annual International Studies Symposium is an independent research project and a conference. The Symposium is entirely managed and organized by a small team of highly motivated undergraduate students of Glendon College, a unique and prestigious bilingual campus of York University, Toronto, Canada. This year the project’s title is The United States of America: The Neighbour You Don’t Know.

As students at a Canadian university, we have a particular interest in our closest neighbour. Our objective is to challenge existing preconceptions and foster honest and respectful dialogue about the United States and its future role in international society. We intend for the USA Symposium to expand and deepen our knowledge base on a range of different topics and provide an exciting learning experience for all attendees. The International Studies Symposium is a unique learning experience and very specific to the International Studies Department of Glendon. Each year, a select group of graduating honours students begins by choosing a country to explore. With the collaboration of a faculty member, the team designs a seminar course with lectures, readings and a research programme. Simultaneously, these highly motivated and hard-working students organize the Symposium. The key elements that go into running the Symposium include: budgeting, fundraising, logistics, networking, marketing, and project management. These are all practical skills that many undergraduate students would never have the opportunity to experience in an average university setting. After the event, the students also organize a research trip to the country for three to four weeks. Finally, on the basis of all these experiences the students prepare a major research paper about the country. The USA Symposium will be held at Glendon College on March 30, 2014. The USA Symposium targets an audience of undergraduate and graduate students, scholars, national political figures, diplomats and other interested members of the community. With the participation of Translation Studies at Glendon, we will offer simultaneous translations of presentations in four languages: English, French, Spanish and Mandarin. There will be five panels throughout the day and a closing speech, all touching on various topics about the United States including:

1. The American Economy in the XXI Century: The Legacy of the Financial Crisis
2. Saving America: A Look at Education, Healthcare and Rehabilitation
3. Media and the Marketing of Security
4. The American Future at a Crossroads: The Environment and Energy Independence
5. Shifting Terrain: Intersectionalities of Race, Class and Gender
6. US Foreign Policy
