Today, we honour the miracle of Jacob. He reminds us that –– whatever our obstacles –– we have the choice to climb the ladder to our highest selves.
As we mourn the passing of Jacob's body, let's join together across the global tapestry of The Empathy Effect to send love and light to his family.
May we all strive to
Love to All,
All For One,
Kim
The words below are from Jacob's mom, Ellen Schwartz, who wrote about her son on Day 59 of
The Empathy Effect's experiment...
Please read and share the wisdom:
Jacob may not be able to see, but he has more vision than almost anyone I know. He may not have mobility, but he has moved mountains. Jacob was born with a neurodegenerative, progressive illness. It attacks the central nervous system.
By all accounts, our son is a medical mystery. Doctors did not think he would survive past his 10th birthday; but, against all odds, he just turned eighteen.
A natural teacher, Jacob spreads empathy and kindness to all those who embrace his lessons. He loves life and lives each moment to the fullest. Jacob appreciates all those who take the time to look into his eyes, windows to his radiant soul.
I am honoured to be Jacob’s student and mother. Whenever possible, I share his wisdom. I could focus on eighteen years of sleepless nights, but choose to focus on Jacob’s ability to wake up every day. That drives me to wake up physically, morally and mentally. Because of our son, Jacob’s Ladder and Project Give Back were born, touching the lives of thousands.
Jacob’s appreciation for the little things in life gives me huge perspective on all the treasures life has to offer. Through the miracle of Jacob, I live in awe of the empathy he is transmitting into the world.

How do you carry on when someone you love is missing?
Because it’s not socially acceptable to wail in public, maybe you stay indoors.
Maybe the pain is so paralyzing that when you open your mouth to scream you have no voice.
How do you sleep? I imagine you can’t. So you choose: insomnia or nightmares?
When waking hours seem like a “living hell,” it is hard to breath, walk or talk. So I’m sure you take refuge in the memories, the smells, the cadence of your beloved’s voice.
How ever one survives — on a mountaintop, or trying to stay afloat in isolation — our work, as witnesses to the pain, is the same: never, ever be a bystander.
HOW DO WE PRACTICE EMPATHY?
One would be mistaken to believe empathy is about casually stepping into someone else’s shoes.
Without movement towards something greater than oneself, what’s called empathy is actually masquerading for pity.
True empathy has no masks because it makes you One with the people experiencing pain.
This is what you need to know:
Jesse Galganov, a 22 year old backpacker from Montreal, is missing. It’s been over 113 days since he was last seen.
Because we — as sentient human beings —are all interconnected, a part of us is missing too.
You can act out your empathy in these ways:

ABOUT THIS PAINTING
Art is a secret language, translating our deepest longings and despair into visual expression.
This leads me to my friend Anne Maizia or Maizianne - Art Gallery. An extraordinary artist and person, Anne offered to donate Scream to our / to Help Us Find Jesse.
The painting is valued at $5,000 USD. When Anne, who is based in NY, offered to donate it to the search for Jesse, I was so moved I started to cry. I knew that only someone with a heart that could create a painting this profound would have the soul to let it go in service to something higher than herself.
Please follow Anne on social media, then follow her lead to give as much as you can. Purchase a Raffle Ticket to help bring Jesse home: www.empathyevents.com.
If we receive a donation over $5,000, Scream will be suspended from the raffle and the donor will be entered into a separate auction for this painting. Anyone who donates $5k will also be entered.
People buying raffle tickets will have access to the $5,000 remainder of raffle prizes.
100% of proceeds from our Raffle will go towards efforts to bring Jesse Galganov home.
With thanks to Anne’s brilliance and talent,
Kim Smiley
