Content note: Death of a child. Take care while reading.
Monday would have been her 19th birthday.
In mid-December 2023, my girlfriend, Amanda, phoned me and asked me to sit down.
She had just found out the day before that her beloved daughter, Ula, age 16, had died of an accidental overdose.
Ula was not only the daughter of my close friend, but the childhood best friend of my daughter, Maxine. For a long time, she and Maxine were more like sisters than friends. I tucked her in bed next to Maxine, kissed her goodnight and told her I loved her countless times over the course of a decade.
We knew Ula had been having a hard time, but we never dreamed that we wouldnāt get to see the beautiful and amazing adult we were confident she would be one day.
In the weeks after Ula died, I found it hard to go on as usualā¦

āLeading with empathy helps your child build positive self-esteem. Even as they are corrected, they know they are still a good person.ā - Sarah Rosensweet
Our children learn to see themselves as they are metaphorically reflected in our eyes, for better or worse. When we correct them, especially if they are sensitive, sometimes what they hear is, āYou are bad.ā
This can contribute to low self-esteem. How we correct them can make a huge difference. If we lead with empathy and acknowledge their point of view, they can separate their fundamental worthiness from what we are trying to teach them.
For example, if your child is eating dinner and accidentally spills their milk, it makes sense to help them learn not to spill it again by pointing out that they had set it down close to the edge.
Leading with empathy and acknowledging their point might sound like: āOh my goodness- I donāt think you realized how close to the edge that was! Letās make sure weāve got the glass closer to the middle next time.ā
