September is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Month, and the Journal of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is sharing research-informed FASD Facts of the Week to build understanding and encourage more compassionate conversations.

This week’s fact: Prenatal alcohol exposure and alcohol-use disorders are public-health issues.

Prenatal alcohol exposure and alcohol-use disorders are not moral failings. Research needs to inform compassionate, non-stigmatizing support for pregnant people and their families.

Our featured JFASD article, “Predictors of Alcohol Use Disorders in Argentinean Pregnant Women” (Volume 2, Issue 1) by Mariana Beatriz López, Aldana Lichtenberger, and Mariana Cremonte, examines factors associated with alcohol use disorders among postpartum women in Argentina. The research highlights the importance of prevention and support efforts that reach people early, address related substance use, and promote informed attitudes toward alcohol use during pregnancy.

Journal of Canadian Studies is seeking submissions for an upcoming special issue titled "My Canada Includes an Extra Chromosome," guest edited by Laura Bisaillon of University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC).

This special issue invites empirically grounded, theoretically informed research examining Canada's "excessive demand" immigration laws and medical inadmissibility policies that exclude migrants based on chronic illness, disability, and genetic difference. Potential topics include Canadian histories of medical exclusion, legal and socio-legal challenges to immigration policy, comparative analyses with other former British colonies, and theoretical frameworks for reimagining a more equitable system.

"For decades, research in applied linguistics and allied fields has been organized around a single orienting logic: the gap in the literature. A CREDIBLE project is organized around a gap in practice. A gap in practice is a real-world need that existing structures, resources, or practices have failed to meet. This special issue of Linguistics and the Human Sciences collects six articles that take a gap in practice as their starting point. Each article documents a CREDIBLE project: an attempt to address a real-world need by producing a tangible resource. Each article thus contributes two things to the field: an article that reports on the work, and the resource, toolkit, economy, or practice that the work produced. September is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Month.

Throughout the month, the Journal of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is sharing research-informed facts vs common myths to encourage more informed conversations about FASD and help reduce stigma.

Myth: FASD affects children more than it affects adults.

Fact: FASD is a lifelong disability. People may have changing needs across childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, including mental health needs that deserve informed, individualized support.

Our featured article, “Psychotropic Medication Usage in Individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and Psychiatric Co-morbidities in Canada” (Volume 4, Issue S1) reflects the importance of recognizing FASD as a lifelong disability: it examines psychotropic medication usage among individuals assessed for FASD in Canada, highlighting the need for careful, individualized support as mental health needs may change over time.
