Why the basics is our bottom line

Sometimes we help our kids TOO quickly.

They don’t know a French word → we translate it.

They get stuck → we give them the answer.

They hesitate → we jump in.

But part of becoming a strong French learner is knowing what to do when you *don’t* know.

Give them a few seconds.

Let them think.

Ask, “What could you try?”

The goal isn’t a child who always knows the answer.

It’s a child who doesn’t panic when they don’t.

The report card usually isn’t the first sign.
You probably saw something before that.
Reading was taking too long.
They were guessing unfamiliar words.
They couldn’t explain what they’d read.
Homework required WAY too much help.
Or you started hearing:
“I hate French.”
“I can’t do this.”
“I’m not good at French.”
You do not need to wait until your child is failing to decide they deserve support.
In fact, I’d rather work with them before they’ve spent months believing they’re bad at French.
That’s why I keep telling parents:
September is the time to put support in place. Not November when everyone is frustrated.

French Immersion parents, I want you to check something before October.
Not their report card.

Not whether they say school is “fine.”

I want you to pay attention to how they’re actually using French.

Are they reading or guessing?

Can they explain what they just read?

Are they relying heavily on pictures, context or Google Translate?

What happens when they come across a word they don’t know?

And if you don’t speak French at home, how are you supposed to know what’s normal and what deserves more attention?

More worksheets.
More apps.
More books.
More vocabulary lists.
But here’s my question:
WHY is your child struggling?
Because if they’re guessing words, that’s one problem.
If they can read but don’t understand, that’s another.
If vocabulary is getting in the way, that’s another.
If they understand but are afraid to speak, that’s another.
Giving a child MORE French without understanding the skill underneath the struggle can simply give them more opportunities to practise the same problem.
Your child already gets French exposure at school.
What they may need is targeted instruction.
That’s a major difference.

This is one of the FIRST things I’m listening for when a child reads French.
Are they actually reading the word?
Or are they looking at the first few letters, checking the picture and guessing what would make sense?
The scary part?
Sometimes the guess is right.
So the habit can go unnoticed for years.
Until the vocabulary gets harder.
The pictures disappear.
The texts get longer.
And guessing stops working.
Don’t only listen for whether your child eventually says the correct word.
Listen to HOW they got there.
If you’re noticing a lot of guessing, this is something we should address before another school year gets underway.

Here’s a test I wish more French Immersion parents knew.
Have your child read a short passage in French.
Then close the book.
Ask:
“Tell me what you just read.”
Don’t worry about asking the question in French.
Listen to what they understood.
Because sounding good while reading and understanding what you’re reading are not the same skill.
And as children move through French Immersion, that difference becomes increasingly important.
If your child can read the words but struggles to tell you what they mean, pay attention to that now.
Don’t wait for the first report card.

This made me smile. 😂

After spending the summer with us, his daughter is convinced I’m going to be her teacher in September.

And honestly, that says a lot.

When children feel supported, make progress and actually enjoy learning French, they want to keep going.

Dad agrees. They’re planning to continue with us this Fall. ❤️
