BC restaurants continue to struggle with labour, immigration, inflation and debt issues. Last month, Accommodation and Food Service was the only sector in BC to LOSE JOBS, during December, one of the busiest tourism months of the year!
BREAKING NEWS: According to TODAY'S Labour Force Survey, British Columbia created 14,100 new jobs last month but they were all part-time (p/t employment increased by 21,500 jobs) while we lost 7,400 full-time jobs. Overall, we created employment in most sectors led by Health Care, Social Assistance, Education and Professional Services / Scientific Services. The only sector to lose jobs was Accommodation and Food Services. Youth unemployment in Ontario has reached crisis proportions, reaching 3X the unemployment rate for everyone else.
BREAKING NEWS: According to TODAY'S Labour Force Survey, Ontario closed 2024 with an increase of 23,400 new workers; although only 9,200 were full-time with 14,200 being part-time. The unemployment rate edged down from 7.6% in November to 7.5% in December. Youth unemployment rate continues to be a major problem in Ontario where the unemployment rate for males between 15-24 is 20.7% (1 in 5) while the unemployment rate for men between 25-54 is just 5.8%. Young women had a better unemployment rate (15.5%) but this was still twice as high as the unemployment rate for the whole population.
