My name is Signe Ronka and I'm the founder of Figure Skater Bootcamp Inc. In short, I was a former National and International medalist in the Junior level representing Canada at Junior Worlds, Junior Grand Prix's and the Junior Grand Prix Finals. I was often plagued with injuries one after another, which took me out of competition in 2006, where I finished top 10 in Senior Ladies at Nationals. I started this program in 2010, with the goal to help skaters train properly off the ice and prevent injuries. It all started with a couple of my own skaters training outside the rink and grew over time until I started up my own studio called Flexafit. I am a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and also NCCP 3 National Competitive Coach Certified. Together with my experience in skating and fitness, I designed a very sport specific training program that takes into consideration movements from our sport, energy systems used in skating and training techniques that are geared to on ice demands. FLEXAFIT® is the ultimate package of off-ice training for figure skaters. Not only does it include Figure Skater Bootcamp, but all the other essentials of training for figure skaters such as off-ice jumps/plyometrics, dance fusion, and flexibility/stretch. You can get everything you need for off-ice training here at FLEXAFIT® with the best qualified instructors. Check out our programs here at FLEXAFIT® to get a detailed description of each class. Give me a shout if you have any questions about our programs and services we offer. I would love to provide you with the appropriate guidance. Looking forward to meeting you!

Hip Strength develops the muscles surrounding the hips to improve stability, control, and lower-body alignment. For figure skaters, strong hips are essential for maintaining proper skating positions, controlling single-leg movements, generating power, and creating greater stability through jumps, spins, landings, and skating skills.

TRAIN YOUR HIP STRENGTH

Put it into practice with FLEXAFIT hip-strength exercises and training videos designed specifically for figure skaters.

The tuck position is critical to get full credit on a flying sit spin. I get a lot of inquiries for help on the flying sit.

You can master the tuck with simple steps:
1. Start off ice with the same movement patterns
2. Build strength and power off the ice
3. On the ice, use our FLEXAFIT EDGE drills in the flying sit section to master it on the ice.

Confidence in your daily practice is part of improving your jumps in the long term.

The end picture is so far away that it sometimes feels like we will never learn that jump we are struggling with. What we need to do is incorporate small habits each day to build confidence.

Take the jump apart and work on daily drills to perfect each part of the jump.

Break up your week into specific drills you need to get stronger and watch how fast that jump starts to transform.

If you need help with drills off ice to set your jumps properly, email us at [email protected]

Or subscribe to our EDGE platform- online.flexafit.com for do at home drills if you want to train on your own.

Are you struggling to get all the way down or get back up on a pistol squat.

Try these:

1. Use yoga blocks on both sides to help assist the push phase

2. Elevate your heel on a mat or soft towel to continue feeling pressure on the heel to press back

3. Strengthen the muscle groups using various different exercises for quads, hamstrings, glutes etc

And bonus tip, check your ankle and hip mobility and any tightness in the low back!

If you want more progressions, subscribe to FLEXAFIT edge for both on and off ice drills and exercises to help improve your sit spin position. Online.flexafit.com

If you are stuck with higher technical scores and need to improve your component scores- make sure you are doing these three things to help this season:

1. Start focusing on your skating skills every single day you skate. Incorporate the edges from your programs into your daily warm up. Better skating skills will really boost the components scores. Increasing flow and ex*****on of the turns gets good points!

2. Start ballet training! Join a ballet class or take styling lessons with our coach Martha in studio or online. Nothing changes over night but with consistent practice, the lines will improve on the floor first. Then you can apply it to on ice. When everything is relying on landing the jumps and spins, your body needs to hit those lines in autopilot

3. Start a theatre on ice class or go to a quiet room, put on various styles of music and just move and feel the music! This is the biggest thing that helped me get creative. My coach would play music and we did 30 min on ice theatre. It was the most memorable times from my skating, laughing, playing etc!

Happy Sunday!!!

At 8½ years old, I joined East York Skating Club to learn how to skate. I had no idea where those first steps on the ice would eventually take me.

From learning to skate, to competing and representing Canada, I later returned to East York as a coach, founded Figure Skater Bootcamp, and eventually introduced the FLEXAFIT® program at the club where my own skating journey began.

On September 30, I’m returning once again— this time with FLEXAFIT® Total Skater Development™ Seminar— to work with the next generation of skaters.

A very special full-circle moment. ❤️

Are you struggling to exit smoothly on your jumps? One important part to off ice training is to progressively load the body from higher heights to match the demand of the jump load on the ice.

Often we see skaters pounding their bodies from box jump heights that are either not appropriate to their age, height or skill level. We need to train the athletes properly to incrementally load the body, otherwise injuries can happen.

Start with a small step and make sure a proper S & C coach is guiding your progressions.

Always ask for credentials when anyone is training your skater in fitness. No fitness background can injure skaters long term- from burn out to overuse injuries and much more.

Happy training everyone!!! If you need help, we are here to guide you with purpose and structure - always with the build a strong athlete first mindset.

Ankle Stability: The Missing Piece in Consistent Landings

When you struggle to land your jumps consistently, we often look at rotation, jump height, air position, and technique. But sometimes the problem starts where a lot of people don’t ever look — at the ankle.

Before a skater can absorb and control a landing, the ankle needs to recognize where the body is in space and respond quickly enough to stabilize it. It also needs the proper range of motion to lift up with good form on the take offs.

Try this simple assessment: Have the skater stand on one leg in bare feet in their landing position for 20–30 seconds. Watch the ankle. Does it wobble? Does the foot collapse inward? Do they grip with their toes, move their arms, or shift their upper body to stay balanced?
These compensations can tell us that the skater needs more ankle control before adding greater speed, height, and rotation. From here we would also do an ankle test to measure range of motion.

Once we know the starting point, I work through three progressions:
1. Hold — Establish a strong single-leg landing position and maintain alignment without excessive ankle movement.
2. Control — Add small movements, reaches, or changes in body position while keeping the ankle and landing side stable.
3. React — Progress to hops and landing variations where the ankle has to quickly stabilize the body on contact.
The goal isn’t simply stronger ankles. We want the skater’s ankle, foot, knee, and hip working together automatically so that when they come down from a jump, their body knows how to find and control the landing.

If you need help to diagnose your jump from a deeper perspective, book an assessment with me: [email protected].
