If family drawing time is ending in frustration, try one of three changes. Make the next step smaller, model the step on your own paper so everyone keeps ownership of their drawing, or change the material together.

A thicker marker, larger paper, or erasable pencil may make the next attempt feel more manageable. Your job is not to correct the drawing, it is to help make the next step clear enough that everyone can keep creating.

Realistic drawing is only one kind of artistic growth. Visual storytelling, intentional choices, and experimentation matter too.

Notice how a child uses characters, settings, action, colour, pattern, composition, details, new tools, or unfamiliar solutions to communicate an idea. Realism can be meaningful, but it is not the finish line.

Before you ask a preschooler, “What is it?”, try: “Tell me about what you have here.”

Early mark making can hold movement, experimentation, and a story, even when adults cannot recognize a picture. You can also say, “I notice these fast lines,” or “You used a lot of space on this page.” These observations keep the child’s meaning in the conversation.
