On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honor the Indigenous children and families affected by the residential school system and reflect on the path toward healing.

Our program thrives by making the city our classroom, and we hold deep respect for the land that supports us. We acknowledge the importance of learning from the past and stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities by recognizing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action.

Today, we pay our respects and commit to ongoing education and respect for the land and its history.

Since OSL started in 2009, we've been fortunate to have so many amazing students come through our program. Today was a special OSL meetup in 📍 Tokyo.
👍🏽So many OSL grads came out to share their support, their stories in the program, and give updates about their lives/jobs. 🏠
Some students now have children, are married, have new jobs, and most importantly still remember their focus sentences. 🙏🏽
A special thanks to Marc and his team at COMAS for coordinating the meetup for us.

Who we are

Our mission, since 2009 has been to guide adults learning English as a Second Language and to change their perspective and approach to the way in which language is learned. Via this process, we hope to provide individuals with increased confidence and improved communication skills which will enable them to connect with and participate more fully in society. This will ultimately transform into increased opportunities in all aspects of their lives.
Our vision is to challenge the institutionalization of adult language education and transform our learners to become independent learners who can clearly and effectively communicate in English with confidence.

We believe that language is not a form of knowledge that can simply be taught and/or memorized. We believe that language is a key to cultural world views, and as such, needs be experienced in its respective socio-political context. A language, as an artifact of cultural history, as well as a dynamic product of currently-evolving society, has transformative power for a non-native who speaks it.

Language carries implicit nuances and knowledge with it: to speak a foreign language is to participate in, and have greater understanding of a culture.

The OSL Program recognizes these elements of language and is therefore designed to be an experiential approach to learning. Our language students are trained on practical sentences and how to approach people and develop conversations. Most importantly they are encouraged to actively participate in a culture/city that they are new to and must be immersed in.

OSL impacts the communities in which we work and we consider our activities to have transformative potential for society as well as for our students. Due to the interactive nature of our teaching model, the lives of everyone in the community are touched and altered. Much like the effect of a stone thrown into a pond - the ripple effect is immeasurable.
