Today, International Translation Day and Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation bring us back to something at the heart of MCIS: the power and responsibility of language.
At our September 30 event last year, Thohahente Kim Weaver shared a powerful reflection on what it means to carry the responsibility of a warrior, including the idea of carrying the“burden of peace.” In this reel, his words remind us of the responsibility language workers carry as bridges between people, communities and systems.
We also hear from Dr. Rebekah R. Ingram, whose work with the Kanyen’kehá:ka Mapping Collective was supported through an MCIS Language Keepers Justice Microgrant. The project documented Kanyen’ké:ha place names, oral histories and landscape knowledge, connecting language, land, knowledge, and generations.
Together, their words speak to something we believe deeply:
Commitment to language cannot stop at words. It requires action.
For MCIS, September 30 is a moment to reflect on that responsibility and the work that continues beyond this day.
No Language Left Behind.
