For 200 years the viol (or Viola da Gamba) with its dark, languid tone reigned as the chief string instrument among professional and amateur musicians. Let’s explore the rich repertoire of chamber and solo music from Elizabethan England through late 17 century France and up to the 3 great sonatas of J.S.Bach.

Monteverdi's Madrigals and the Dawn of Baroque

Although Claudio Monteverdi is best known as the father of the opera, it is his eight books of madrigals, published by between 1587 and 1638, which represent the gradual change of musical aesthetics - from the renaissance paradigm of a perfectly balanced counterpoint to expressive, bizarre, sometimes harsh writing - baroque.
