Monteverdi's Madrigals and the Dawn of Baroque

Although Claudio Monteverdi is best known as the father of the opera, it is his eight books of madrigals, published by between 1587 and 1638, which represent the gradual change of musical aesthetics - from the renaissance paradigm of a perfectly balanced counterpoint to expressive, bizarre, sometimes harsh writing - baroque.
