Technology changed the environment.
It didn’t change human behaviour.
When we communicate through a screen, we still look for information about the person in front of us.
We do this constantly, often without realizing it. We are always collecting small data points to understand the person we are interacting with, while also giving them small data points about ourselves to interpret.
We often think communication is about the information we give, but we forget that we have multiple channels of communication… not only our words.
For example, does your team only show their head on the screen, or can others also see their hands? Open hand gestures can contribute to a sense of openness and engagement.
And what about the environment behind them?
Does your team appear in a completely blank environment, or is there something that gives others a glimpse into who they are? A picture, a book, a guitar they love to play ext… something that can create a natural topic of conversation, just like we used to have in our physical offices.
These details may seem insignificant, but they can create additional points of connection.
Connection is key to any business!
How are you creating opportunities for your team, clients and partners to connect with the person behind the screen?
The medium changed.
The human need to understand the person on the other side didn’t.
