Blend Sounds with Playdough
Turn phonics practice into a hands-on learning experience! 🎉
Give your child three small balls of playdough and place one beneath each letter in a simple CVC word, such as m-a-p.
1. Press the first ball and say /m/.
2. Press the second ball and say /ă/.
3. Press the third ball and say /p/.
4. Slide a finger smoothly under all three letters while blending: “mmmaaap—map!”
5. Roll the balls together and say the whole word.
The movement helps children connect each sound to the complete word while strengthening fine-motor skills. For an extra challenge, use playdough “snakes” under blends such as sh, ch, or st, reminding children that the sounds flow together smoothly.
Try words such as:
cat - sun - dog - fish - ship - stop
Keep it playful, praise the effort, and repeat the activity with new words!

New resource alert: Decoding Nonsense Words Practice Cards are now available!
Why nonsense words? They force students to rely on phonics rules instead of memorized sight words—building true decoding skills and confidence. These cards are designed for:
• Kindergarten to Grade 2
• Small-group intervention and 1:1 tutoring
• Multisensory routines (tap, blend, read)
Skills covered include CVC/CCVC/CVCC patterns, common digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh), and initial/final blends. Use them in literacy centers, as quick warm-ups, or as take-home practice.

Decoding nonsense words builds strong phonics skills by helping children focus on the letters and sounds—not memorized words. Try reading words like mip, sug, and lat to practise blending and decoding.

Turn UFLI lessons in a detective mission!
Your learner will follow the path around the board as
they complete each part of the lesson.
Getting ready
Choose a small game piece, mini eraser, button , or Miss Alphabetty character to use as your learner’s detective marker. Place it on start.
Tell your learner “we have a new case to solve! Each time you complete a learning mission, you’ll move your detective marker one space closer to solving the case.”
Follow the mission path. Move the game piece one space after each part of the lesson is competed.
After completing move to the case solved box. Celebrate with a high five and say”
“Case solved! You followed every clue and completed today’s reading mission!”
Teacher Tip:
The board is meant to make the structure of a UFLI lesson visible and motivating. Learners can see what they have already accomplished and what is coming next. It can be especially helpful for young learners who benefit from predictable routines, movement, and a clear beginning and ending.

Building Capitals with Shape Sticks (HWT-Inspired)
Today we used our shape sticks just like the Handwriting Without Tears wooden pieces: Big Line, Little Line, Big Curve, Little Curve.
Children learn that all capital letters are made from just these four shapes, which makes letter formation feel simple and predictable.
We practiced:
• Saying the shapes as we build: “Big Line down, Little Line across” for L, “Big Line down, Big Curve around” for D.
• Matching the pieces to a letter card or mat so students see where each line or curve belongs.
• Tracing the finished letter with a finger, then writing it on a small chalkboard: wet–dry–try style.
This multisensory routine is wonderful for:
• Pre-K and K learners building capital awareness.
• Children with dyslexia or motor-planning challenges who benefit from concrete, tactile pieces.
