The 20th edition of CIFAR’s DLRL Summer School brought nearly 200 next-gen AI talent from around the world to Canada for 10 days of intense learning at the Vector Institute, bringing the global DLRL alumni count to nearly 3K. 🎉

Approximately half of this year’s attendees were international students, hailing from 25 countries. Notes Elissa Strome, Executive Director of the Pan-Canadian Strategy at CIFAR, “For twenty years, DLRL has grown in stature as an incredible opportunity for the world’s best emerging talent in AI to come and learn about the latest advances in the field. Our alumni have gone on to create some of the most important breakthroughs in the field, and they frequently cite DLRL and their time in Canada as planting the seed for their scientific ideas and collaborative networks. For Canada, the benefits are an enriched and diversified AI workforce and research networks and deeper opportunities for future global partnerships in this important field. It’s a win-win situation.”

La 20e École d’été APAR du CIFAR a rassemblé au Canada près de 200 talents en IA de la prochaine génération venus du monde entier pour 10 jours d’apprentissage intense à l’Institut Vecteur, portant le nombre d’ancien.nes de l’APAR à près de 3K. 🎉

Environ la moitié des personnes présentes étaient des étudiantes et étudiants étrangers, originaires de 25 pays du monde. « En 20 ans, l’École d’été sur l’APAR a pris de l’envergure et constitue à présent une occasion en or, pour les talents les plus prometteurs de l’IA dans le monde, de venir s’informer sur les dernières avancées du secteur, explique Elissa Strome, directrice exécutive de la Stratégie pancanadienne en matière d’IA du CIFAR. Les membres de nos cohortes sont à l’origine de certaines des plus grandes percées du domaine et attribuent souvent la naissance de leurs idées et de leurs réseaux de collaboration à leur participation à l’École. De son côté, le Canada y trouve une main-d’œuvre et des réseaux de recherche bonifiés et diversifiés en IA, ainsi que des possibilités accrues de partenariats mondiaux dans ce secteur important. Tout le monde y gagne. »

Twentieth edition of CIFAR’s DLRL Summer School brings the world’s top AI talent to Canada - CIFAR This year’s summer school hosted by the Vector Institute brings the number of global DLRL alumni to nearly three thousand.

How can we make AI that works for everyone?

In April, a CIFAR-led panel at brought together Canada CIFAR AI Chairs David Ifeoluwa Adelani, Catherine Régis, Golnoosh Farnadi and Data Communities for Inclusion Solutions Network co-director Colin Clark to discuss.

“AI has the potential to do a lot of good in the world, but it can also reinforce and amplify existing issues if we don’t take care,” said Elissa Strome, Executive Director of the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy who moderated the panel. “By continuing to support the work of leading researchers such as these, the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy at CIFAR is setting the stage for the future of global AI safety, fairness and inclusion.”

Comment faire pour que l’IA soit au service de tout le monde?

En avril, un panel dirigé par le CIFAR au a réuni les titulaires de chaire en IA Canada-CIFAR David Ifeoluwa Adelani, Catherine Régis, Golnoosh Farnadi et le coresponsable du Réseau de solutions Communautés de données favorisant l’inclusion, Colin Clark, pour en parler.

« L’IA pourrait faire beaucoup de bien dans le monde, mais elle peut aussi renforcer et amplifier les problèmes existants si nous ne faisons pas attention », a déclaré Strome, directrice générale de la Stratégie pancanadienne en matière d’IA, qui a animé le panel. « Par son soutien continu aux travaux de brillants cerveaux comme ceux-ci, la Stratégie pancanadienne en matière d’IA du CIFAR prépare le terrain pour l’avenir de la sécurité, de l’équité et de l’inclusion en matière d’IA à l’échelle mondiale. »

J’étais enchantée de rencontrer les représentants de l’Institut canadien de recherches avancées (CIFAR). Après avoir dirigé la première phase de la Stratégie pancanadienne en matière d’intelligence artificielle, le CIFAR apporte son soutien et ses conseils aux provinces, tout en assurant la coordination au niveau de l’adoption d’une réglementation sécuritaire en matière d’IA.

CIFAR and TELUS recently brought together a group of students to think about what the future of AI could and should look like.

“We asked student leaders to envision the year 2050, and forecast how AI could serve the public good, specifically for the future of education, the climate crisis and mental health,” said Elissa Strome, executive director of the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy at CIFAR. “It was terrific to hear their fresh perspectives and ideas for how AI can best serve humanity into the future.”

The takeaway? AI needs more human connection.

La conclusion? L’IA doit favoriser le contact humain.
