Department of Arts, Culture and Media at UTSC The Department of ACM works with students, staff, and faculty to present and facilitate artistic, cu

ACM Programming is an exciting initiative that works with students, staff, and faculty to support the departmental academic curriculum and to present a range of artistic, cultural, and scholarly programming each year. Engaging, informative, and unique, most of our events are free and open to everyone: future/current UTSC students, alumni, faculty, staff, and members of the public. Our activities include:

- Coordinating workshops inside and outside of the classroom, providing intellectual and creative space for faculty and students to engage with invited guests
- Building critical and creative connections with local cultural organizations, in order to facilitate fieldwork opportunities for students
- Providing individualized support and mentorship to students in the field placement stream
- Facilitating student-initiated and student-centred research projects relevant to building critical and creative connections primarily to the Eastern GTA

Visiting Artist Lecture Series 2026–2027: Artist Talk with Marzieh Miri
 
In this year’s VALS, we will be exploring topics and questions with 8 different visiting artists throughout the year on:
 
- How histories are carried across generations
- How communities are sustained through relationships to place
- How more just and resilient futures can emerge from renewed ways of relating to the land

Our second artist will be...
 
Marzieh Miri is an Iranian-Canadian multidisciplinary visual artist whose practice explores place, land, and environment through photography and other lens-based media. Her work examines the relationships between people and their surroundings, with a particular interest in memory, displacement, and belonging. Working across photography, video, sound, and alternative photographic processes, she explores how places are experienced, remembered, and transformed.

Her work has been exhibited in Iran, France, Austria, and Canada. With a background in architecture, she has also worked as an educator, writer, and critic. Her writing has appeared in books and international journals, and she has presented her research at conferences in Canada, England, and Iran.
 
This year’s theme: 
Stories Held by the Land
 
Our relationships to land are shaped by history, memory, and the places we come from. They are formed through stories of migration and belonging, and through the ways our ancestors lived with, cared for, and drew sustenance from the land. 
 
As questions of land use, displacement, and ecological degradation become increasingly urgent, how do artists engage with the land as a site of remembrance, reciprocity, and resistance? How can artistic practice challenge dominant narratives of ownership and extraction while imagining more reciprocal ways of living grounded in kinship, care, and connection?

Our first artist will be...
 
Nour Bishouty is a multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, moving image, works on paper, writing, and artist publishing. Her work attends to fragmentation in history, and the ways knowledge and fantasy are produced and withheld. 
 
Bishouty’s work has been exhibited internationally including at Museo Universitario del Chopo (2026), Mexico City; Liverpool Biennial (2025); Cooper Cole, Toronto (2025); Art Jameel, Jeddah (2024), La biennale de Québec (2024);  Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography, Toronto (2022); GTA21 Triennial, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Toronto (2021); Darat Al Funun, Amman (2017); Casa Arabe, Madrid (2016); Access Gallery, Vancouver (2015); the Mosaic Rooms, London (2015); and the Beirut Art Centre, Beirut (2014).
