Israel has introduced a breakthrough in sustainable technology: smart water pipes equipped with tiny hydroelectric turbines that generate electricity from water pressure. Instead of wasting excess pressure, these in-pipe turbines convert it into clean power that can run sensors, support pumps, or even supply energy back to local grids.

Developed by start-ups like Leviathan Energy Hydroelectric and backed by Israel’s Water Authority, the system is designed to transform city water networks into renewable energy sources. Early trials show that a kilometer of pipeline can produce several kilowatts of electricity, depending on the water flow and slope.

Beyond clean power generation, these turbines help regulate water pressure, reduce leaks, and cut operating costs — turning everyday infrastructure into a smart, efficient micro–power plant.

Gustav Holst’s piano is up for adoption. 🎹

The Holst Victorian House in Cheltenham has launched an ‘Adopt an Object’ scheme to raise vital funds for the birthplace museum of the composer. Alongside the Collard & Collard piano, supporters can also adopt items such as the family gramophone, portraits, and autographed manuscripts for a year.

Martin Renshaw, from the Holst Birthplace Trust, said the initiative aims to raise £25,000 to help preserve the 1830s house.

Adopting Holst’s piano costs £3,000 for the year. Holst purchased the instrument second-hand in 1913 for £12, choosing it for its light touch to accommodate the neuritis in his right arm. Described as “a composer’s piano,” it has two strings per note, rather than the usual three found in concert pianos, giving it a more sensitive tone.

Together with his Broadwood piano at St Paul’s Girls’ School, this was the instrument on which Holst composed his famous orchestral suite, ‘The Planets’.
