Kids (and parents!) learn Cantonese better when they’re having fun 🤩 Hi, I’m Samantha, and Jok Sing Jai is my passion project.

My goal is to use this platform to improve my Chinese, teach my kids Chinese, and help other like-minded Jok Sings do the same. If you’re like me, you’ve probably been called Jok Sing 竹升 at some point in your life. The name 竹升 comes from the Chinese word for bamboo 竹, which is a symbol for being hollow. In other words, 竹升 don't really fit well in either culture. Now that I have children of my own,

Initially, I was planning on making a kids workbook and writing would have been one of the exercises.

But I come to realize how difficult writing these characters would be for beginners, and kind of want to scrap it.

Should I just focus on reading and understanding instead?
