Join us on Thursday June 18 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm for An Evening with Judy Frater, specialist and author of Artisans by Design: An Odyssey of Education for Textile Artisans in India.

The evening includes a talk about Judy’s journey developing the first contemporary design school for artisans in India, sharing fifteen years of innovation for artisans engaging with design.

The event will also include a trunk show of textiles designed and created by artisans featured in the book, and available for close observation and purchase.

This evening offers a rare opportunity for understanding personal connections to craftspeople, and provides insights into cultural heritage, craft, and the creativity of traditional artisans.

This is event is free but registration is required.

Guided by a deep respect for existing materials and the understanding that nothing should go to waste, you’ll explore how simple stitches and focused attention can transform fabric fragments into objects of beauty and meaning.

Join Timothy Manalo on May 2 for Dyeing Philippine Textiles and dive into the world of natural dyeing using food waste and spices commonly found in home-cooked Filipino dishes.

Learn how to make your own dye vats, extract color from the food materials, and use mordanting processes to achieve vibrant and lasting colours. The workshop will also include resist dyeing techniques and eco-printing on blank garments and fabric samples.

Join Erin MacKeen on 3 Sundays from April 12 - 26 for Screen Printing Fundamentals. You’ll learn various techniques for designing screens and approaches to printing on textiles. You’ll have lots of time to practice printing and use your screens to work on a project of your choosing.

Learn to repair and reinforce worn spots in your jeans using Japanese Sashiko thread and denim scraps to extend the life of your favourite garments. Denim Mending with Carolanne Graham is coming up on Saturday April 11.

This exhibition showcases work in the form of textile techniques on cloth bags, from a cooperative of textile artists who share a studio space in downtown Toronto.

These artists are unified by this creative space and a shared exploration of design and textiles that bridges art and craft, beauty and utility. They engage with processes that have a rich history and renewed contemporary application, such as natural dyeing, stitching and embroidery, slow fashion, repurposing of materials, foraging, handwork, printing, and communal making. These human-centered practices also speak to sustainability, respect for resources, and making meaning from what we create and how we contribute to an inclusive collective experience.

Everything included in this show required assembly by hand, and in some cases, many hands, and we wouldn’t want it any other way.

It’s the perfect day ❄️ to post about our upcoming Sweater Mending workshop on January 31 that starts our mending series that will give you the tools you need to repair and reinforce your favourite garments.

Scotch darning uses rows of interconnected blanket stitches over along weaving style thread. Use this visible mending technique to add beauty to your favourite well worn sweater.

Drawing with Felt & Thread is coming up on February 8. Spend the day with Erin MacKeen exploring how to create small fibre drawings using needle felting, stitching, and beading to create your own images on a selection of wool surfaces.
