Canadian English
Canadian English contains elements of both British and American English, as well as some uniquely Canadian characteristics.
Broadly speaking, Canadian English tends to be closest to American English. Canadian and American English are classified together as North American English.
Languages of Canada
Both English and French have official federal status throughout Canada, in respect of all government services, including the courts, and federal legislation is enacted bilingually.
English and French are the mother tongues of 56% and 21% of Canadians respectively.
Quebec’s official language is French, although the Constitution requires that all legislation be enacted in both French and English.
Canada’s linguistic diversity extends beyond the two official languages. About 14% of the population speak a language other than English or French.
Canada is also home to many indigenous languages. However, taken together, these are spoken by less than one percent of the population.
