His parents fled war and came to Canada in search of a better future. Today, Drilon Ramadani, a student in Seneca’s Fire Protection Engineering Technology advanced diploma program, is honouring their journey by pursuing a career dedicated to protecting others.

Every student has a story, and Drilon Ramadani’s is one of perseverance, gratitude and hard work.

The son of parents who arrived in Canada as refugees after fleeing war, Drilon grew up with a deep appreciation for education and opportunity. After graduating from Seneca’s Mechanical Engineering Technology – Building Sciences program, he returned to pursue Fire Protection Engineering Technology and is now gaining valuable experience through a co-op placement with the City of Toronto.

Drilon says his parents taught him that success is built through dedication and patience — lessons that continue to guide him as he works toward a career helping keep communities safe.

This June, we recognize National Indigenous History Month by honoring the rich history, diverse traditions, and enduring contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Turtle Island.

Long before modern suppression systems and building codes, Indigenous communities utilized "good fire" to manage fuel loads, promote biodiversity, and prevent catastrophic wildfires.

True fire safety requires a holistic approach. As future fire protection professionals, we believe in the value of "braiding" western science and technical engineering with Indigenous traditional ecological knowledge. We continue to learn from Seneca Polytechnic First Peoples and strive to incorporate more ways for our students to connect with nature.

​Take time this month to listen, learn, and honour Indigenous fire stewardship across Canada.

Happy Pride Month 2026!

At Seneca Polytechnic’s School of Fire Protection Engineering Technology, we are incredibly proud to celebrate the vibrancy and diversity of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community this June and all year long.

Our program is committed to Fire Protection for ALL. We understand that safety isn’t just about physics, code, and systems; it's about the people and communities we protect. We believe that true safety is only achievable when everyone feels seen, respected, and valued.

As we continue to iterate on values of EDI, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment for our students, faculty, staff, and partners. We encourage open hearts, open minds, and an ongoing dialogue about the vital intersection of engineering and human-centric design, and the importance of representation in all fields, especially STEM and fire safety.

A final thank you to everyone who participated in the Canadian Association of Fire Investigators Ontario Chapter seminar, that we hosted at Seneca Polytechnic this week.

Meeting attendees from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, Quebec, (and even Ontario!) was special for our students.

OFM speakers opened the day with insights to best practices and showed the engineering that supports their investigation findings.

Then we heard from Envista Forensic regarding BESS and EV charging.

The day ended with speakers from Clean Core Research giving the results of the VR investigations from day one and a speaker close to our heart...Kevin Hooke, from Toronto Fire Services, who is our Seneca Alum! He discussed the efforts their department has taken to reduce risk to the public and their service members from lithium ion battery fire exposure.

The event completely knocked our SOCKS off!

Today Seneca Polytechnic hosted the Canadian Association of Fire Investigators seminar where Clean Core Research provided insight into Lithium Ion batteries and the unique challenges they bring to fire investigations.

Through destructive testing, virtual reality, and discussion on previously collected evidence, our students and industry partners were able to delve into the evolving fire protection requirements and understanding.

Thank you to everyone who made this day possible for our students and making them feel so welcome!

We are to work with both of these organizations and are excited for Day 2!
